Post subject:  Winodw Tint Warning: What happens next?

I got my front 2 windows professionally tinted to match the rear windows on my 02 Limited. Tonight coming home from work I got pulled over. The cop was real cool about it, and even joked with me, but ended up giving me a warning. Now, B/c I got the warning, do I need to remove my window tint and sent he warning card in saying I fixed the problem, or can I just go on about my daily business? What is the factory tint % on the 02 Limited b.c. my front window tint is a real close match, maybe a little lighter than the factory tint. What is PA state law on front window tint percentage?

You should focus on what PA's legal limit for tinted windows.

It is different in every state. In KY the readr windows can be 100% Limo Black. The windshield and the front door windows LEGALLY can not be more that 65% tinted.

The factory windows are around 80%. Had my fronts done to match the rear windows.

Check your local and state regs. Or just go on with your daily business and hope he never sees ya again.

I believe that you are allowed NO tint on front driver/passenger windows in PA. BTW, rear window tint on the Libby's is 20%...

Anyway, I would think that if the officer gave you a written warning, you'll unfortunately have to remove the tint.

Good Luck!

Same thing. 20% tint blocks 80% of the light.

If the state says no tint I would take it off, I had tint on one of my old cars and kept getting $20 warning tickets until the same cop pulled me over again and since I did not fix the issue he gave me a real ticket $75.00 and had to take time off work for court. it's just more hassle than it's worth IMO

You can read this http://www.berksweb.com/users/dmv/tint/ Image

But it may end like this http://www.berksweb.com/users/dmv/tint/auto.html Image

At the end of the day you may have to take it off to avoid being harassed.. Image

Yes it was a written ticket. It just sucks b.c. It has been on there since July and I've passed thousands of cops at day and at night and not one pulled me over, why now?

The key to it here in KY is that a window tint violation is a SECONDARY offense. meaning that you have to do sometyhing else wrong and gfet pulled over for that violation before they can question your window tint levels. Our seatbelt law was that wy until recently now it is a Primary Violation. But get this IF they feel that you are not wearing your seatbelt and pull you over THEN they can inspect your tint.

Make sense to you?

Meaning that IF the tint is liught enough to see that you are or are not wearing your seatbelt, then it shold be legal. If they cant tell and they pull you over and you are wearing it they can still inspect.

Have fun in Penn. I just looked through the link above. I thought KY was confusing.

P.S.

I hear that there is a HUGE push going on here in Louisville Metro and the whole state to increase the ticket writting. I heard one guy say that it comes from the federal level. States need to increase funds from tickets and thus they (here in Metro Louisville) are as of 2/1 going to be writting for 5 mph over and EVERY thing they can find.

They estimate that Louisville metro can generate over 9 million bucks in Feb alone from this push.

Everybody be careful.

WoodysKJ: it just goes to show that if the gov. cuts taxes somewhere they HAVE to make it up somewhere else.

No, it pisses me off cause its been on there over a year, and noone complained. Its not even that dark. I see cars pass me everyday that have tint so dark and cant see inside it, if sitting on the inside they cant see out of it. why me? it looks factory and you can see through both windows in the daylight!

Sorry about your tint woes. That sucks. When I moved to VA from KY, a cop pulled me over for speeding (which I was) and told me, "You were speeding, but one of the main reasons I pulled you over is because your windows are tinted too dark." I (stupidly) commented, "I'm from Kentucky" and he goes, "Doesn't matter, not legal in Virginia." So, in case anyone is thinking about driving through VA, don't forget to stop at the border, strip the tint off your front windows and windshield, dismantle your radar detector and store it all in a locked box in the trunk (if you have one...if not, you're just hosed).

I never pulled the tint off my windows and was never pulled for it again. It was only 65% Titanium tint anyway. Give me a break.

VA used to have a medical tint exemption. If you could get a doctor to say that excess light was detrimental to you in any way, you could put (what I like to call) Kentucky Tint on your front windows. They got rid of that though.

In your case, I'd only think about de-tinting if the cop patrols an area that you frequent. If not, go on with your life tinted.

Yep, that's how it works. Why me.. You may have gotten a cop who just wanted to his job, you may never see him again and never be harassed for another 4-5 years, OR he may spot you again within a month and give you a ticket. That's how it works when you've got something illegal on your vehicle. When I first got my tint, I saw nightmares of getting pulled over, ticketed, etc.. It is the chance you take. You cannot complain as it is the law.

I'm not a cop, but if I was, I would want to be able to see into a car I pulled over. I don't think its unreasonable to pass tinting laws for a vehicle that uses public roads.

That being said, its a bit like speed laws, you could get away with it for a long time, but be prepared to pay the fine when you get caught. A little civil disobedience is not a bad thing.

As I said, check your state laws. I do beleive that if the tint is from the factory, and you move to a state with different tint laws, you are exempt. Know your laws. Don't listen to us on here. Go check it out. I am sure it is accessible online.

Yes I know. And the funny thing is when he pulled me over and walked uip to my window he could see right in. And even in daylight you can look through my dirvers side window and see right into thr inside and see right through the passanger side window no problem. It's just tinted enought to match the rear windows.

My other question is, If i do not get it taken off and do not mail my written waring in stating i got it taken off at a state inspection(they have to sign), what happens then?

Yeah, here's one for ya; not tint related though. I was driving to Snowshoe to go skiing MLK weekend and got pulled over in WV for having to many lights illuminated on the front of my Jeep! I mounted 2 little cheap-o fog lights under my front bumper, I had those on as well as headlights and the driving lights (I don't want to hear the crap about driving lights and fog lights...don't care, I like the way it looks). You are only allowed 4 lights other than marker lights turned on in West Virgina. The cop was cool about it, only got a warning (probably since I'm from KY), but just a fyi. It really pissed me off cause it was the first time I had ever been pulled over!
