Post subject:  Sunroof Thumping in your ears!

I have a 05 limited with a sunroof, problem is. When you open the sunroof all the way and have the windows closed you get a thumping in your ears when you reach a speed much over 25 mph, crack the window a bit it goes away.
Was going to try one of those air deflectors that goes just ahead of the opening, but didn't have the extra cash then. Now I have been looking for one online and can't seem to find it any more. Just the ones that go over the windows and across the rear.
I am wondering if any of you have this problem, tried this fix, if so does it work, and if it does where can I get one?
Thanks for all your help Sue

I don't have a sunroof, but I put deflectors on all 4 of my windows and it seemed to cut it down a little when I would roll down just the back windows (for my dogs). It was still there though. I would still end up cracking one of my front windows about an inch or so and it woud be totally gone. I would suggest doing the same with the deflector on the sunroof anyway. If you have the $$$ maybe get all 5.

This is common for any car with a sunroof, try cracking the rear windows. Works well. It also happens if you open just one window all the way in just about any car. It's a pressure equalization thing... Air rushes in, creates a higher pressure than outside, so it pushes air out untill the pressure gets lower than the incoming air, which then pushes in again, vicious cycle!!

This is a known issue with the Liberty, it's in the owner's manual. It reccommends cracking a window, but I hear the wind guard works well. I have WeatherTech ventvisors all around. They're low profile and best of all they're in channel and don't stick on directly to the paint. I think they now make a low profile in channel visor for the sunroof. I'm probably going to buy it.

hey i was wondering how the "in channel" vent visors work? How do they stay in place?

thanks

Try holding the little deflector down that pops up when you open the sunroof. I can't figure out it's purpose other than to make noise when the sunroof is open...I know you can't drive and hold it but see if knocks out the thumping.

Then duct tape it down :D

It won't... that little deflector is there to try to break up the wind so it's not as noisy. My Jetta had one too, but it had like teeth on it. Still thumped.

Physics, it's the law. Can't get around it... Crack a window :D

I guess i have the only KJ that doesn't have the thumping noise? Mine only has the obvious wind noise.

My friends 4runner does it really bad, sounds like a helicopter landing nearby!

I put on of those tinted deflectors just ahead of the sunroof and it just about solved the problem. There is still an occasional thumping, but no t nearly what it use to be. I just got a universal vent visor model from a local part store. Just need to get one that is a bit larger than the sunroof width.

I hear the Thumping when I roll down the front window. Just have to crack the back window and it goes away.

Fix the thumping noise by reducing the size of the storage hole in the back. That's where the wind is going.

mine "thumps" i just roll down a rear winder, i figure that if its warm enough to have the sunroof open, i can have a winder open also!

i got the 'in channel' wind deflectors and they work great.. no thump thump with the sunroof open and slight crack in the window with the visors.. i got 39k miles so lots of driving on the hwy at 'legal' speeds :) no problems with them coming out.. i dont like adding aftermarket items with 3m tape on the paint.. the in channel ones look great and fit perfect

It's also to keep the air from catching your overhead and turning the cloth lining in your cealing into a big airbag. Had a 94 LHS before the KJ. It NEVER made these kinds of noises.

My 04 was fine till I put the air deflector on it (after it's first cracked windshield). After it was installed, if driving over 50 w/the sunroof all the way back, the little "roof wind deflector) would hop up and down like horny rabbit. :? If I closed the roof half way, no problem till 70. The "thumping" I hear happens when any window is open on one side of the car and I have another window open on the ajoining side. Cracking the sun roof doesn't help and cant say if the front bug shield is the culprit but I have "disturbed" the beasts aerodynamics in such a way, it's pissed and sounds like it...

They have a thin upper edge which is shaped to fit into the window track. This has double stick tape on it. You basically shove it up into the weather stripping that the window seals into. I guess the window sorta jams the double stick tape up into place and combined with the edge on the visors holds the whole thing into place. I have them but were waiting for some door repairs before I stick em in. I may do it anyway.

ok one more question then, does the visor fit between the metal window frame and the rubber window seal? or between the rubber seal and the glass of the window?

thanks

How does an "In Channel" visor for the sunroof work? I understand how the window visors work, but do you really want to be jamming things into the sunroof seal?
