Post subject:  Thoughts on Hood Louvers

OK has anyone installed any louvers in their hood yet? I have two styles that I have laying in the garage ready to go. One set is about 5.5 inches by 6 inches (square design) , other set is 4.5 inches wide and 13 inches long. One set black plastic, (used on E-Squads to help cool their engines, 5X6 ones) other set from a Bayliner and stainless....TOO SHINEY/ BLING BLING!
Leaning towards the black (very heavy) plastic ones just due to design, where I can put them, etc. They will be mounted about 5/6 inches from the rear and about from 5 inches from the center dip in the hood.
The way they are designed very little water will run in the plastic ones but the Bayliner ones will allow water to POUR in if sitting out in the rain
See lots of louvers on trail TJs, Grand Cherokees etc so now I am ready...I think

So any thoughts / likes / dislikes / pros / cons

The Jeep is not yours until you cut two big holes in the hood, TOM!

Good Grief Charlie Brown, I can see about 10 pages of B.S. coming on this one. Just do whatever it takes to make your tennis shoes squeak, and be done with it.

Hey Nick,
Its been getting pretty boring on here lately, so thought we all needed a new topic to go on and on and on about. I already know what and how I am doing it I just want to hear more mindless dribble about nothing

Need some hood louvres off a Grand Prix GTP. 1994-96 had the short five vent louvers, the 1990-93 had the longer 9 vent louvers. The 9 vent are more effective and look awesome, but are much more difficult to find.

I had the short ones on my old XJ, so I threw one on Troys jeep to see how it looked.

Here are the longer GTP vents that went on Dirk's TJ that I helped build once upon a time.

Got any pics tom? The ones sitting on Troy's KJ look pretty good. If they look like that, I'd say go for it!

The only question I have is if this would increase the chance of water getting into your engine when you're splashing through creeks in Kentucky.

Been trying to find some of the GTPs (used ....poor man here) but all I find have some of the mounting ears broken off. Those look about the best though, some Luminas had some also. Right where those are sitting on Troys theres a brace, so they need to be back further on the hood, one reason my longer ones will not work :? Mine are basically square, 6 1/4 wide and 5 and 1/2 long with 8 louvers. Not the ones I really want but they will find in there since I cant find any GTPs!!!!

Marty would like to have the sunshine thats in that picture! Forgot what it looks like!!

Jon, now you have seen me crossing creeks before, so you know that I drive SO SLOW through them that I hardly ever make a even a splash, nary a ripple ....very slow driver......I am....really   So how would water get up there?

I think this is a great idea. The only thing I would be really concerned about is getting the louvers mounted too far back on the hood. Back near the windshield is a low pressure area so there wouldn't be any hot air evacuated at higher speeds. Instead it might acutally suck air into the engine compartment when you drive down the road.

Somewhere in the middle / rear-middle of the hood would probably be the ideal location I believe.

I have checked out this idea also. I think it would help a lot to get rid of the trapped heat under the hood. Take a look at these: www.raceace.com

I helped put those exact ones on a friends XJ. He said they they really made a noticable difference in the temparature. I forget exactly how many degrees cooler his engine ran but I know it was decent, cause I was a bit surprised.

These things obviously are only for warm places where heat is something you really need to get rid of. Not so here. We need all the heat we can get!

Had a set of these on the Cherokee, done well but want some thing different.

Placement on the KJ has a lot to do with cross braces under the hood, not much "open " area to put them

I went out and looked at my Jeep a little bit more today.. I think the best idea to find the proper placement of the louvers would be to tape some small strings to the hood of your Jeep and then drive down the highway. This way you could note the location where the high pressure ridge transitions into the low pressure pocket that we typcally find at the base of the windshield.

Then from there, you can try to find some wiggle room for cutting around the stiffener brace.

i would probably just put them where they look the best! :D

i dont think there would really be that much performance difference depending on where you put them. not to mention, youre really worried about them working off-road, so worrying about high speed air flow and such might not be that important. unless your planning on doing some street racing in that thing! i wouldnt put it past you tom...

It's not about the street racing rather more about keeping rain water from being sucked in at highway speeds when you are driving to and from the trail. Any location will work at low speed but when you travel on the highway you don't want to be raming air into the engine compartmet - rather you want to extract it

Actually was thinking about putting my wife on the hood and have her move around to see where her hair blows around more ..then less,

But its going to be more for low speed, and I really dont think it will suck any water in where I have them sitting at now at higher speeds, still have some more experimenting to do before...I GET TO CUT HOLES !!!!! 8)
