NEWS REPORT "New rules will force the car kings to shift their focus. Revised CAFE standards require automakers to raise the average mileage of their car and truck fleets to 35 mpg by 2020." Can you imagine a wrangler getting 35 mpg? Pretty cool! Maybe the future for Diesel is looking better every day. |

its an average between all their trucks, not everyone single one will need to be 35mpg though. If they get one that does 60mpg that will help the average so they dont all have to be at 35mpg |

exactly, with one in the line up with 60mpg it would save the existance of say the viper or corvette which hopefully would never get 35mpg. If a viper or corvette got mileage like that they wouldn't have what makes the viper a viper and the vette a vette. But more diesels in the future would be a nice thought, the torque would sure be useful in the offroad world! |

Good point guys! Just means that there will be a bigger push for smaller cars with smaller engines. The need for better mileage cars might limit the number of trucks and SUVs offered. If you think about it, 2020 isn’t that many body style generations away. |

It's already happening.. The Grand Cherokee will offer the 3.0 diesel in the laredo model starting next month. More diesels will hopefully find their way into the product line! |

next month? you can already build the laredo with the bluetec now, and have been for at least 2 months. |

What a sad day that 35 mpg CAFE will be. When you pull out in front of my family truckster with your Smart ForTwo, maybe they will be able to seperate your remains from the car and not have to bury the whole deal together. |

Rest assured if I could find a diesel smart roadster in the US I would be driving one in the summer. The smart cars are actually pretty damm safe. |

Actually, I was reading that 2012 is just when the Aztec calendar stops. Not necessarily the end of days. That comes when the Chinese buy the Jeep name. KJKev |

I question if ethanol will be around by 2020. I hear more negative criticism about the current ethanol fad then I do positive reinforcement. 1. Water tables are dropping. Many dry farmers here in western Kansas have already plowed under their winter wheat because it is too dry. 2. The wide-spread lawsuits regarding water rights has increased 3. The cost of running irrigation pivots has caused farmers to revert to more water friendly crops 4. The rising cost of corn, milo, and other forms of cellulous 5. The cost of producing ethanol 6. The future of diesel might be the final kick in the butt. 7. The need for more fuel efficient vehicles by 2020. I don’t think ethanol will be the answer? |

Maybe this is why Jeep made the Caliber...errrrr....Compass. And the Patriot. So we can all have our real Jeeps. As for diesel, they're working on producing bio from algae in West Texas, it's supposed to have a higher energy yield than anything else and can be grown anywhere. |

I agree, algae biodiesel will really help improve fuel efficiency while reducing the use of petroleum. Western Kansas is already been considering building a plant for algae diesel production. |

That's exactly the reason...and the only reason the Aveo exists, too. if they have TWO models based on the same platform (ie Patriot/Compass) in addition to the Wrangler, Liberty, and Grand Cherokee, that's a 3:2 ratio of crappy gas mileage vehicles vs good gas mileage vehicles, rather than a 3:1...which is twice as good...and as that magnificent vocalist Meat Loaf tells you...two outta three ain't bad. This is the way I understand it...don't confuse me with the facts |
