| Post subject: | what size receiver extension do I need to fit a rack? |
I’m ordering a rear receiver today and I can get free shipping if my order is over $150. So I also want to get the receiver extension at the same time. I’ll need it in order to fit a hitch mounted bike rack with the spare tire on the jeep. Below are the links for everything I’m about to get. The bike racks are still up in the air but it will be one of those three (must have the swing out feature and I hope to find a used one.) Everyone has told me I need an extension or I will need to take off the spare tire but no one has told me what size I need. It looks like the smallest option is 8” and after that it goes up to 14” or 18”. I’d rather go as short as possible while still clearing the rear tire. Does anyone know what size receiver extension I need? IIRC, 8" is enough. I think it was only 6" to clear the tire. Don't quote me on it though I'd wait for someone else to chime in. |

so, that's 8 inch in the pick? i got the same question for a canoe loader/holder. it needs to truly extend beyond the tire, as a pole fits in it, going straight up towards top of jeep, past the tire. based on that pic, i'd need another 4-6 inches for it to work. i'm guessing the same for a bike rack... |

Anyone else? After looking at that picture above it does look like I would need at least 10 – 12” which I’m not happy about. Does the size of the extension measure the entire piece from end to end or only the portion of it that extends from the end of the hitch? If it is end to end then I probably do need that 14” piece which probably only extends it about 8” if you figure 4 of it will be inside the hitch. |

Be careful! My DrawTite receiver sticks out about 3 inches more that the Hidden Hitches do. Find what you want, then measure (or ask here by brand name). |

Lost Eddie - Does your Draw Tite hitch stick out past the bumper? I was under the impression that it would still be about an 1" or 2" behind the bumper. |

Drawtite (Model#75128 if I remember right) receiver sticks out from the bumper cover like Eddie said. I have a Haulmaster cargo rack I bought from Harbor Freight and use no extension to clear the tire. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/D ... mber=34313 |

Yes, DrawTite receiver sticks out about 3 inches PAST the bumper. I like the look of the HidenHitch but the DrawTite is rated higher and with a standard receiver the spare tire is not in the way. I will take a pic when the wife is home. |

I'm not sure if you got the bike rack yet or not, but Allen brand makes a rack that will clear the spare tire on the KJ. Heck it clears the spare on my YJ with 33" tires and an aftermarket bumper and spare tire carrier. I have one and it's a good quality item. http://www.bikesomewhere.com/bikesomewhere.cfm/productLarge/300/2083/6006?i=default |
