Post subject:  Lot's of LOST members have the Rusty's Lift, some people...

have had problems with the rear shocks (choppy ride etc.) and some people have not.

I was planning a group buy (about a month ago) and heard this complaint and the request to get Rusty to replace his rear shock for the Rancho RSX 17004.

At the time he (Rusty) told me that Monroe is the manufacturer for his, the Rancho as well as the Old Man EMU shocks. The Rancho is identical to the one in his kit. Therefore swapping out is not necessary.

How many of you are not happy with the performance of Rusty's lift (rear shock specifically)?

Thanks in advance!

yeah, the darn things don't fit right so you gotta add washers and then they bang around becasue they still don't fit right unless you torque them down every three months, thereby bending your mounting brackets. The shocks themselves seem ok though.

You know, I have never had problems with the shocks. I have never had to add washers nor continually torque them down.

I didn't do the install, the dealer did. I suspect they used an impact wrench to tighten everything. Have had no issues with the mounts loosening up yet. Have had the lift on for about 6000 miles now. The shocks themselves have been fine also.

clickly click click under 35mph. Yeah, they suck. But they do work, eventually I'll get my replaced. They still ride ok and I just tighten up every now and then.

Seems to get worse in the winter/cold months. Had it over a year.

Not trying to start anything here but...yes the Rancho and Monroe are under the same anme but the 2 shocks are way different. Rancho is one of my customers and they use all kinds of different valving, fluid, rod, and seal that the plain jane monroes do not use. Hoep this helps. later...Clint

I just ordered my lift from Rusty last week and I had to use washers on the top of the shock, but it doesn't make any noise at all. The washers allow the top bushing to be preloaded and it's a very tight fit on mine.

The jeep really does ride better than stock, I didn't believe it when I read that from others with the lift until I installed mine.

I wheeled the crap out of it yesterday and it did amazing, love the lift and rubicon tires!!!

Mine is in. Staying tight. Washers used. Choppy ride noticed at first - now I don't notice or it went away. It might have as much to do with shocks as it did with being higher and getting used to that pogo stick feeling.

But the lift performs AMAZINGLY well. No noises. No ball joint contact even when on the lift and wheels dropped all the way down.

I'm very happy with mine after 14,000 miles.

I never noticed any chopiness with mine.. the shocks ride quality is fine, it's just, as mentioned before, the top mount isn't the right size.. Mine just started making some noise recently after about 8 months.

Don't forget to get a front end alignment completed about two weeks after you installed your lift or suffer a great amount of wear on the outside of the tires. Don't do the alignment right away. The lift needs to settle.

no probs here BUT is appears that the shop that did my install used a flat piece of metal plate for a spacer. lucky me since i didnt know about the problem at the time

I did the install myself....maybe that prevented any problems....for the rear, I slipped a couple fender washers in to take up the slop....tightened them down and have had no issues since....maybe I would notice something different if I had the ranchos but as it is, mine rides pretty nice....

Image

additionally, I guess I got lucky....it was rusty who answered the phone on a couple different calls....he was very friendly and answered my questions about alignment specs and a few other questions....I got my parts within a couple days and everything was in the box....

I have noticed that my front springs have settled some in the year (plus) that I've had them....I would have asked for the heavy duty springs....it's still good though, just a small loss of height....

also, from the all powerful internet web.....

Thank you EVERYBODY. I had a feeling I'd get a mixed response, it seems if the spacing is noticed on install it can be taken care of with the right washers.

Steve, you have some great pics of the rear shock in mounted.
Where exactly did you install those washers (at the top of the shock?)

Again, a sincere thanks for all the responses.

Post subject:  No Problems Here

I had a local 4x4 shop do the install so I'm not sure what they did to make everything work correctly. I haven't had any problems with Rusty's lift (to include the rear shocks). I've had it on for about 18 months now.
