Okay, I just saw a Jeep Cherokee, with the steering wheel and driver on the right-side turning at an intersection. There was nobody in the "our driver's-side" seat. Is it legal to drive a right-sided driver's side vehicle in the U.S., except for US Mail carrier Jeeps? I could see a lot of people doing double-takes as he turned and drove by. |

I think as long as it was, or is registered as a mail carrier then it is legal. |

It wasn't a mail vehicle. It was a regular Cherokee. |

I think it is legal, as long as it fits all of the other regulations (emissions, etc...) Yup raceinfan |

Where I come from in good ol Vermont, they use cherokees for mail cars. They have a setup with two steering wheels sometimes! Like a driver's ed car... Just put a US MAIL thing on the roof rack. |

you do not need to be a mail carrier for a rt hand drive jeep. YOu can order it from the dealer that way if you like. I saw them in MO all the time, on the sticker, it is called a Mail Delivery PKG. MO has a lot of private Rural mail routes, that is why they were on the lots in stock I guess. In fact I think the first lib sold in Sedalia MO was a rt hand drive. |

You see old Rolls around and other foreign cars that were RHD originally. I bet as long as it was built that way, and passed EPA mustard when imported, it's ok. Hmm. RHD MO pkg. Could get annoying at the drive-up ATM's and Drive-thru's! Be funny taking clients out in it though. |

This topic made me a little curious so I've been doing extensive research into the United States Code for transportation (49CFR) as well as Arizona's statutes (Title 28 ). So far I haven't found anything stating that it is a requirement for the steering wheel to be on one side of the vehicle or the other. The only I can find is that the steering wheel is expected to be in the front quarter of the vehicle. Doesn't say the left quarter or right quarter, just quarter. In my opinion... As long as the vehicle can be operated safely by the driver (whether the wheel is on the right or the left) then I don't see a problem. I made some calls to some resources I have just to be sure I wasn't missing anything and they don't believe it is illegal either. I'm still checking around and will let ya'll know what I find. |

I used to think it would be really cool and unique to have a right-hand-drive vehicle. It would get a lot of looks. But then I started thinking about how much I like drive-thru food. And toll booths. Letting passengers out on sidewalks without getting out. Not to mention the hassle of getting used to perspective of the road (I'd be hitting a lot of curbs for the first week or so I bet). |

Another interesting one is the McLaren F1. While it's not pratical by any means, the steering wheel is in the center of the vechicle. Oh but that's a million dollar car, so who cares! |

So, imagine the look on the cop's face when he pulls you over for going thru the toll backwards and you tell him you have to! or the look on the drive thru person's facewhen you pull in from the wrong direction..... |
