| Post subject: | TPMS indicator |
I'm not real sure where to post this, so please move as you see fit, mods. Yesterday I got in my Jeep and noticed that there was some indicator light on on my instrument panel. I had to take out the manual to see what it was. It turns out that my Jeep might be equipped with the tire pressure monitoring system. That was the light that was on. I immediately stopped and checked my tire pressure. My left front tire was down to about 27 psi and was supposed to be 33. I filled up all my tires to 33 psi and started the engine back up. This time, after the normal indicator lights turn off, the instrument panel beeped and the TPMS indicator flashed for about 10 seconds and then turned off. It does this each time I start the vehicle now. From what I read in the manual, this type of behavior typically means that there is a fault in the system. Do I need to get this checked out or am I just missing some sort of reset since I inflated the tires to the correct psi? Thanks in advance. Ben |

Tires that aren't in use (when parked and always the spare) only transmit their sensor readings something like every 13 hours (according to one source, another said every hour). When rotating about 25mph or faster, they send updates frequently. I'd recheck all tires after the Jeep has sat overnight, to keep the system happy they all need to be within 2psi of each other and pretty darn close to the 33psi recommended. I had to go pick up a more accurate gauge than the old stick gauge I had, it read a little higher than actual so every time it was cold in the morning my TPMS was lighting up. Basically, once you get all tires accurately cold filled once and take a drive, the light should go out, unless the spare was low ... might take an overnight duration for the light to go out then. |

The light doesn't stay on. It flashes for about 10 seconds right after I start up and then stays off. For some reason I didn't check the spare... I'll do that on my lunch break. |

Sorry, in the case of it flashing for several seconds and then turning off, I believe you are correct, there is a fault in the system (missing report from one sensor, etc) ... ick. For the system to work, you'd need to get it checked out. As long as your tires are properly inflated, of course, feel free to continue driving in the meantime. |

Laters Must be some sort of timebomb with the TPMS... both of ours started yesterday... I really don't know when I'll be able to get it into the shop since it's not all that critical. |

Ben I checked my tires and my spare was a little low, filled all tires to the same psi and my little flashing light (tpms) stopped turning on. Hope this helps. laters |
