Post subject:  Spark Plugs Info and Location

Im about to hit 35K and need new spark plugs. Where are the spark plugs located on this engine? and What spark plugs would you guys recommend? I looked under the hood and its not like my previous car where they're clearly placed in the top of the engine.

they are individual coils. you will see these inbetween the valve cover and the intake manifold. there will be 3 of them in a row(normal electrical wires going to a plug which plugs directly into the coil, so dont look for big/thick spark plug wires), you have to take a bolt off(i THINK 10 or 12mm) each coil, pull straight up and the spark plugs will be underneath them, some of them may be tricky to get to, so you might want a universal attachment for your socket

couple of the bolts you need to remove for the coils will have a little vacuum tube holder, just pop it off the head of the bolt, youll see what i mean

They are on-top of the engine.

I used Ac Delco platinum spark plugs in my kj and it runs great with them in. I got them free also from an Ac Delco rep so cant complain about the price either lol

Last one on the passenger is a PITA. It's a bit easier if you take the overflow tank out of the way. I recommend Autolite Platinums.

Gotcha! Found them, im used to the big thick spark plug wires. Yeah the passenger side does look like a bit pain. Thanks for the info

I've noticed a considerable MPG drop lately so im hoping this will help get it back up to where i was. Not that it was great in the first place!

Maybe stick a new PCV valve in while you're at it then. Only about ten bucks. A bad one can affect mileage.

I would reccomend the NGK Iridium IX Spark Plugs # - ZFR6FIX-11 they are pricy but I think they are worth it. If the engine is real dirty go to a car wash a few days before and blast the engine pretty good you will thank yourself later. Follow the write up posted it's great with the picures. Don't plan on it being a half hour service job, so plan at least a couple hours. The radiator overflow bottle is in the way, some have said they have done it with out this. I tried several different angles and still had to move the box. Make sure your spark plug socket hold the plug real good you don't want it falling out before you want it to release. When I did mine, since I pulled the airboxes for more work space and easier to work around I also pour some SeaFoam down the throttle body before I started removing plugs. By doing this everything had a good soaking while I changed the plugs and smoked like crazy when I started everthing back up later. Learning how to work on your Jeep is a good thing, when I first looked under the hood I was like where are the spark plug wires???? Anyway have fun and the more you learn about your KJ the better off you will be.

If you have ever changed a set of spark plugs in your life on any car, the KJ is not really going to be a problem for you.

Takes me about 1 hour in the driveway with most of that time spent getting the Overflow tank out of the way.

A set of 6 Iridium plugs will set you back around $50.00 but they are fantastic plugs

A PCV should only cost around $5.00

Good luck

If you have a decent selection of extension lengths, and a good swivel, this is a quick job.

Un-snap the air cleaner lid, loosen the clamp at the throttle body, and rotate the tube/lid so it lays down the center line of the engine. This is a great time to replace the A/C element. Unless you are running a high-end element like a K&N, you cannot change these too often for optimum performance & fuel mileage.

Disconnect the coil wires. This allows you to pull the coil-on-plugs straight up rather than twisting them around to get them out. This is a big time saver.

By standing in front of the jeep, you can easily pull the C.O.P. off the rearmost pass. plug. Drop your socket w/ u-joint style swivel in, use the appropriate length extension, & the plug comes out as easily as the others with the overflow bottle in place ( at least on an '05. Not sure if the bottle is the same size/shape on all years.)

15 minutes later and you are enjoying your favorite beverage.

BTW: People who tell you that certain plugs, like Autolite double platinums, are correctly pre-gapped are misinformed. They also tell you you cannot check the gaps. Well, using a set of plastic feeler gauges, I found that my plugs, although the correct part #, were gapped from .47 to .49, so all of them were wider than the suggested gap.
