I have an '05 Liberty limited with a trailer package (almost never used) and was wondering if it really matters if I use 75 - 90 or 75 - 140 differential fluid. I'm having it changed tomorrow so please respond ASAP.

If you don't tow or offroad, you can use 80w90 (conventional). You only need 75w90 or 75w140 (synthetic) if you tow or offroad a lot.

I have 75-140 Amsoil in the diffs and I almost never tow anything. Gets a bit stiffish at -40C but otherwise it's great.

75w90 would work for regular use but if you ever tow anything heavy you would probably be better off w/ the 75w140 in there. FWIW, I use the 75w110 Amsoil Severe Gear just in case I pull my utility trailer around w/ some weight on it. Not sure if anyone else is making an in-between weight like that though.

The specs have changed in the lube world, so I would at least go with 75w110. See the recommendation at this link:

http://www.lubrizol.com/products/automo ... l/J306.asp

I am going to be swapping out my rp for amsoil severe gear 75w110 in the spring...

Here is a quote from the link in my post above:

Axle efficiency can be improved by using lower viscosity fluids (such as SAE 75W-90), which minimize frictional churning losses. However, light trucks and SUVs are often used in conditions that expose axles to heavy loads or high operating temperatures. These conditions require superior axle protection, often provided by choosing a heavier viscosity fluid (SAE 75W-140, for example). Commercial vehicle applications may have even more stringent durability requirements. However, providing high durability and long vehicle life often reduces fuel efficiency.

The new viscosity classifications provide more flexibility for OEMs to select the optimum viscosity grade for an application. For example, the SAE 110 grade should be useful in an SUV or light duty truck where improved fuel economy is important but high torque or durability at high speed operation is essential.

Good luck :o
