Because it seems to be the case with mine!! I just discovered this by accident
Can anyone elses KJ do this??? I'm also hearing a faint random ticking/clicking on and off sounds on the top left of my dash when I'm driving which is driving me nuts, maybe it's a loose connection which is causing this light issue, any thoughts??

any car i have been in can turn the lights on without the key in. thats why lots of people have a dead battery in a parking lotl because they leave their lights on lol

Haha ok, yessss..
I thought it was a faulty connection. You'll have to excuse me  I've only ever driven older cars where these features weren't available ((not naming the models/year hahahahhh))

Everything I've owned from my '66 Buick Special to my '01 Exploder (including the KJ) has had the ability to turn the lights on and off while the ignition is off...what on earth couldn't? Headlights must've been running on the switched hot instead of the always hot

HUH! ..must've been habit for me to always turn em off before takin out the key then, duh on me..haha. but still, something is weird about em bc w/the key out, i turned them on, then turned it to parking lights and the main lights stayed on still and then moved it to 'off' and they still stayed on. after a second rotation back down to off they finally went off. i think i might have a wiring issue i'll haveta take a look at.. thanks for the quick replies tho guys

No, thats the sentry light function.

if your lights are on when you remove your key they will stay on for 60 sec or so.

if you turn your lights off and then remove the key they stay off.

the sentry headlight thing can be kinda annoying, if just for the fact that people feel that they have to flag you down on your way into the store, heaven forbid you leave your lights on for 10 mins.

^what he said.

Just a note, you cannot run the battery down on the KJ. It will automatically turn the headlights and inside lights off after 8minutes.

You can disable that by keyless entry (IIRC) or EVIC programming (for sure).

I first thought it was a bug in the KJ code when the lights stayed on, but discovered that they stay on to guide you on the way to your door in the dark ;)

When in doubt, get that book out and read it. I think it's called the owners manual.

Yeah. I love that feature in mine :D I can turn off the engine and remove the key but still use the headlights and parking lights. Plus they automatically turn off in a few mins. You cant beat that :D

Would probably even work with my fogs - I didn't have them from the factory but the sense wire for the relay goes to the park lights so if they shut off after the set time then the relay would open and shut the fogs off as well. May have to try it sometime just to verify (I love experiments like that :D )

Oh, I beg to differ.

And isn't that just the most annoying thing ever? How much does it suck to have the lights turn off after 8 minutes leaving you in the dark?

Hey,

The sentry feature is adjustable in the EVIC. But the clicking sound you hear is the headlight relay cycling on and off as you drive. Have you had your multifunction switch replaced? that thing can cause all kinds of issuse from interior lights coming on at will to what you are experiencing.

You may not see it happen but it sounds like your headlights are flashing as you drive down the road. Bet all the cars around you think you are nuts.

IF you have any warrantee left, stealership should replace. They know about this issue and no recall YET, (I think).

I didn't see the headlights going on and off but maybe they're toggling btn bright/dim/bright/dim etc I haven't checked that... I'll call the dealer tomorrow and see if I can bring it in for them to look at. the jeep's at meineke right now getting the dirty work of the 60k-maintenance done ((fingers crossed)) oh and yes..luckily I still have the 7/70 warranty til oct. why do you think the multifunction switch should(hasn't been) recalled..have you heard this this happening to a lot of kjs?

It is VERY common in the 02's and have heard a few about the 03's and 04's. Same switch.

The misses 02 did these kinds of things. new switch no more ghosts.

Until it shorts and burns a few to the ground it probrably wont be recalled.

Get it fixed before the 7/70 runs out. Not a cheap switch i understand.

Well I guess going to the dealer and having them verify that the problem is the multifunction switch is probably my best bet then.. thanks woody
