:( When I back up, and not all the time, but maybe 1 out of five times, and then put it in drive it takes awile for the transmission to put it in gear. If you give it gas too soon it is like doing a small neutral drop. The dealership which has seen it going on three times said on all KJ's they can take up to 10 seconds to put itself in gear. Has anyone ever heard of that? Does anyone think a performance module will help the computer put it in gear any faster?

Jeeps use an electronic shifter for their automatic transmissions. Maybe if the teeth aren't lined up, the computer will wait until they do befor it moves and locks the planetary gears.

Yes, I have the same problem. I talked with my dealer and he said that there was no recall for the problem but that he had heard of it. Must be a Liberty quirk!

I caused some gear clashing once when I quickly shifted from forward to reverse (or the other way) while giving it a little gas. It sounded a little bad. I think the Liberty could/should shift faster. But, I am a fresh convert from Manual to Automatic and I have been away for 20 years. Shifting a manual seemed much easier. And, I remember shifting an automatic as at-least quicker and with little worry of gear damage.

It is not just a jeep thing, all Chrysler autos do the same thing, at least the low and mid level ones, do not know about the higher priced cars, can't afford so I don't look.

My 92 Caravan did the same thing that my Lib does, when you shift, if you listen you will hear the clicking of the servo shifting you into gear.

Mine does it... frreaked me out the first time because mine has 80K plus on it and it didn't do it until recently. Only when it's warmed up, too.

Anyway, ripped the ENTIRE thing apart and found nothing odd about it. It only happens once in awhile...so just pay attention and don't over rev it until the POS catches up...

Are you guys talking about the DC tranny? That wonderful wratcheting noise? It's the selenoids (sp?) in the tranny opening and closing. All DC trannys do that. Next time your in a parking lot listen for a minivan to back up.

Mine gear hunts for a while unless I'm already going fast and just gunn it, or start from a dead stop. Rolling stards, going around corners, etc, it thinks about down shifting twice before it does.

Not sure how long ago you took it in, but this is a know issue. there is a valve or switch that when malfunctioning allows fuild to drain back into the pan, this causes two issues:

hard downshifting and spining torque convertor with no trannny output

my KJ with almost 53,000 on it does the same thing, but when it does it, it's got a great little "CLICKCLICKCLICKCLICK" when it does it, almost like if you throw it in park while movin about 30-35mph.

Normal. They all do it.

I will say, it's kinda fun listening to the solenoids. I think the noise is kinda cool myself.

Although, with the '05 Renegade... it's not as loud as my '04. Oh well, I like mine better anyway. ;)

Same thing. Also notice sometimes when its real cold it goes into gear VERY quickly, but others it will take a long time to finally get into gear. And you can hear the solenoides goin crazy in the process too. Glad its not just mine.

Anyone else also having harsh shifts into drive when hot? Seems like mine wants to grind into drive from reverse when its not. You can't hear it, but you can most definately feel it.

Mine will act funny once in a while. I have had it grind when shifting from reverse to drive (it did this for about 2 weeks). This morning it was and still is 35 deg. so when I shifted from reverse to drive I had to give it a sec. to get into gear. I know that it is just this tranny since my wife has an 04 GC and it acts just fine.
