Post subject:  Quick question......

Do you have to buy bolts for the strut plates from the stealership, or can you get them from any auto parts store? If the latter, what size are they?

WOW, can't believe I stumped the masters!! 34 view and no one knows the answer?

I guess I'll go to the stealership tomorrow and pick some up.

I'm not sure if i know what your asking but i'll give it a shot. So you mean the bolts for your stock upper strut plates? If so they are pressed into the plate(i believe). What are you planing on doing anyway?

I'm installing a 2.5" lift with new upper strut plates. I thought instead of installing the old strut plate bolts, I'd buy new bolts and have them pressed into the new plates but I can't seem to find where to get them other than the stealership. Where else can I get some?

Have you tried calling parts stores? Strut plates are available for pretty much any car you can imagine...I couldn't imagine the KJ not being one of them. 04+ F150s use a similar front suspension to ours, and you can get the strut plates for THEM...

Oops...misread. I didn't know anybody sold strut plates without the studs pressed in...

I stopped by two parts stores today and they couldn't find any information for me. I assumed it would be a common part too.

The bolt it self can not be replaced
they are pressed into the plate
now I know that the local Napa has the OE strut plate on the shelf
I dont see the bolts being a problem but the bushing can go bad
and if not properly assembled fail allowing the strut to pull out ,ask nolakj

501... if your palnning on installing a big OTT spacer on the stut plate and thats why you want longer bolts i wouldn't recommend it but thats just me!

The daystar is not a OTT lift, you need to disassemble the strut/coil and add the daystar spacer, just like the Frankinlift uses.Daystar makes aftermarket upper strut plates also, the Frankinlift use those same daystar strut plates.

501..I think it was you that posted before about putting a 1/2"+ strut plate spacer to gainalittle more lift combined with the daystar lift right? You can try and modify the strtut plate but's it not a good plan IMO. but why not install a 1/4" strut plate spacer (same as rusty's) and do a small clevis to gain any extra height you may want? I'm not trying to tell you how to do it but just give a suggestion that has worked for me and others on here. I would hate to see the strut plates fail afetr you take out the pressed in bolts and try to add longer ones.

I plan on doing a clevis with the 2.5" daystar. It came with the strut plates and says to remove the bolts from the original plate and press them into the new plates. I was hoping to buy new bolts and have them pressed into the new plates, that way I'd have all new instead of old bolts with new plates. I'll give NAPA a call tomorrow and see if they have the bolts. I tried some of the other local shops but they can't find a listing for them they say.

501 you got al the wrong answers to the right question.

There should be some aftermarket bolts that fit the top plate. But why do you want to renew them. They do nothing more than hold the strut in place, they don't get stressed that much so...

You can take the old ones out yourself without a press:

Fit the nuts so they are flush with the top of the thread. Get a socket that is just a bit wider then the base of the nut. Use that as support. Bang with a big hammer, they should pop out with just one blow.

To refit: get a nut (or 2) that's bigger than the diameter of the bolt. Slide it over and then fit the original nut. Now tighten and the bolt will be pulled into the new top plate.

Done.

Blasted time difference. When you posted it was 23:33 over here and I was in sleepie bye bye land.

Thanks Tony, I'll check with NAPA and if they don't have anything, then I'll just have to remove the old and use them. I just liked the idea about putting new ones in with the new plates.

renegadekj it was I who is making the 1/2 strut plate. the daystar looked like it was a little over 1/4 inch when i put them in. i'm not able to work on them as i left them on the boat and its out to sea atm. still have to cut the hole in center and drill holes for the bolts. i don't see why going from 1/4 to 1/2 would be a problem. i'm also extending where the strut mounts to so the spring doesn't have to be compressed as much to get the strut bolted into place. oh and by the way you can pick up the bolts from a hardware store. just get the grade 8 (same as stock)
