So its time for my second oil change in my 08 KK, and I have never been one to use synthetic oil. But I used regular only in my 04 KJ, and it seemed to loose power as the miles racked up (I sold it with 60k). Is there a beneficial difference between regular and synthetic engine oil? I'd like to use synthetics only in my new Jeep, but I want to be able to justify the price difference. I normally pay around $25 per oil change for regular oil at Texaco Express Lube, any idea how much more it would cost to use synthetic oil? I'm sorry if this topic has been beaten to death but I couldn't find a straight posting about it. Thanks everyone for the help

JP

Jiffy Lube does Mobil-1 synthetic for around $75 for their "signature service". Don't ask me how I know.

yes synthetic is worth the price. i run full synthetic in everything. do your self a favor though and dont take ur KJ to a quick oil change place. its really easy to do urself and u can save alot of money that way. you can do it urself and have about the same amount of money in sythetic as u would if u payed them to use dino oil.

Syntheic Oils don't break down as much over time and have better lubrication characteristics that should help extend the lifespan of your vehicle. You won't notice a big increase in performance or anything, but the justification is in a motor that runs 150K miles without breaking down [that motor should continue to go for at least 200K]

The price is shocking, but the reward is great

I have been running syntheic for over 15 years now, would not run anything else. I normally buy a new vehicle and run them up to 175,000 to 200,000 before retiring them. My last Jeep Cherokee has over 265,000 and never had the valve cover off, ran full synthetics in it all the time! They will run cooler, easier and much longer from my own testing. My Kj has over 97000 on it and uses no oil, still runs great and no problems, switched it at 7500 miles. I do my own chages so 30 bucks does it. Oh and I use Mobile 1 !! On an extra note on my Harleys I run synthetic as well and it drops the engine temp 25/35 degrees easy, somedays even more!

I use mobil one SYN(soon to be Valvoline SYN), a pure-one filter and only pay $28. Its the same price as those places that strip the drain plug and over-tighten the filter but I use good stuff and do it myself. :)

The word "synthetic" AND "oil" returns 387 threads in the search function. As of late the topic has been beat to death. No disrespect meant to the thread starter since they didn't know but it is getting crazy how many synthetic threads have started lately. The topic itself can also create friction (pun intended) and brings out people that want to beat the topic to death and challenge anything others say about the topic.

My best advice is to check out bobistheoilguy.com if you want to really learn about synthetic oils and lubes and are interested in extended drain intervals or oil testing. I do sell Amsoil oil and filter products and I do believe that they are the best lube and filter products you can buy but I Really suggest that everyone do their homework if it is important to you to find the best oils and filters. If it isn't important to have the best and you just want to run synthetics or partial synthetics and change at normal intervals or only slightly extended then any of the big name brand synthetics will work better than dino oil. Will it be worth any added expense? Only your wallet can really answer that question. Peace of mind is worth something to me so I use what I use and I am happy w/ my choice.

I run Amsoil and Amsoil filters in everything on the Jeep. Change the fluids myself(except the tranny) to keep the costs down, but I also get the preferred customers discount directly from Amsoil, so it helps with the costs. I change my oil/filter at arouind 7500-8000 miles and the oil still looks great.

Another vote for Amsoil. I run Amsoil fill synthetic in all my Jeeps. Most of my fluids are Amsoil and Amsol filters. I think the extra $$ you spend for a good synthetic is well worth it.
