when i get my surco roof rack, i was thinking of getting a metal jerry gas can... and holder to connect to the rack.

my question is, those that have one, have you ever had the need for it really, or is it mostly just for looks?

Do you ever go on long off road trips where you will need extra fuel? Trips that long where you can't top off somewhere and make it through a trail are few and far between so I don't see a need. MOst trips that you go on where you would need it you will know in advance and you can make arrangements to have the extra for the trip so no reason to cart it around on the roof all the time.

Certainly not a bad idea at all, just not one of those priority things. Like a good jack or similar tool, gadget, etc. you might need more some day.

Get the gas can and meet us in Moab and we can use the gas can on a run up to Hole In the Rock where you will probably need the extra fuel.

You'd better not be doing Hole in the Rock this time around, because I really want to do that trail !!

Ripticket,
I have one and have only used it twice, and only once on the trail.
While I used to put it on for every trip, I found that it catches branches very easily and it can be a pain if it leaks due to atmospheric pressure differences. That said, I do use it on long trips or runs that take you far from civilization. It's very reassuring when you go into Death Valley or on the way to Moab and you see the "No Services for the next 100+ miles" sign.

You would have to go on a week long offroad trip to need those. Ive been offroad for a full day and didnt use a 1/4tank of gas.

I guess if it takes along time to get to the trail after you stop at a gas station then you spend a full day on the trails and camp that night with more offroading the next day you may need some extra gas. Thats a long sentence.

I loved my gas can. Fill up with cheap gas in town, instead of that one station out in the middle of no where charging an arm and leg for gas. I just pull in, buy a soda, use the restroom, and top her off with my own gas, and I can make it all the way back home.

And you will always find some poor soul out of gas somewhere along the road. What comes around goes around, so I usually stop and help.

I have carried one on my previous vehicles and I never actually got to use it (on my own rig). It did see a lot of use for people with ATV's that ran out on the trail.... it really just becomes the "in case I run into someone on the trail who ran out of gas" can.

But now I have a diesel... so that wouldn't help much.

From my own personal experiences, I have come to appreciate the extra can of fuel. When we lived in New Mexico (where gas stations are very few in-between towns) it made life a little less stressful. I have to agree with Burchie, fuel out in the middle of NO WHERE can be very expensive! And as Burchie has already mentioned, you never know when you can help someone out! I also tow, which really decreases my mileage, therefore the extra fuel comes in handy! This is what I’m planning to do with my can.

You could get a water can instead.

I’ve heard that plastic fuel containers do not draw condensation like the metal cans. Although, I’m sure that the amount of condensation build up would depend on humidity levels and how long you kept fuel in your can.

i would haved loved to get the spare tire and hi-lift/jerry can, but i didn't get it when i originally get my bumper, but i forgot to!

i was going to get the watercan too, b/c my g/f and i are going on a trip this spring break and summer, i think after i get the rack, i'll get both the jerry and water cans!

so plastic h20 can and metal jerry is that what i should get?

on of my friends has the jerry cans that he is/was going to mount on his M416 trailer....didn't or wouldn't do him a lot of good when he ran out of gas the other day on the way to work without the trailer....you don't have to be on the trail to need extra go-go juice!

This flat one would work well on a roof rack. Probably not as good looking as a jerry can though...

As pricey as gas is right now, I don't think I would leave any exposed to the public eye for fact that it would probably be stolen if left unattended.....

That's pretty cool!
Where do they sell it?

In addition to the raw distance you can cover, another good reason is if you're doing any kind of rockwork (or large stumps, etc) in the middle of no-where. It's not too much of a reach to imagine poking a hole in a fuel line or tank. Once patched, you need enough fuel to get you back to civilization.

Man oh man ... I remember watching the fuel light very closely on my last trip to Death Valley with Young Ted :) I already used up my spare gas on the second day and on our way out when the light came on. Good thing we made it to Stoddard just in time. I hate to think what would have happened if I didn't have the extra five gallons ...

It’s times like that when you are thankful that you made the effort to bring along the extra fuel. The cost of the can and the extra hassle to keep it filled pays for itself in five-fold. :D
