Just registered my o6 Libby CRD sport here in Maine Gasp $1300.00. for a 2 year old car. taxes and registration and fees and fees and fees. Tell me there are others that feel my pain. Well maybe someone from New Hampster can tell me they only paid a couple of hundred and I will feel better. R |

remind me not to move to Maine! Just go and visit, what all does that cover or you have to pay that every so often or just once? |

Wow, Its $78 bucks for tags in Illinois, only have to pay tax when you buy the vehicle. I think Indiana has the same sort of "tax you on everything you own once a year system" Tell me you don't pay property tax or sales tax in Maine so I don't have to feel sorry for you |

I think in the big picture taxes in Maine are #1 or close to Mississippi. But the people of Maine pay huge heating costs. I love Maine but hate the taxes. R |

When I regestered my KJ in SD(bought it new in '02) was $20 +sales tax, which is only 3% in SD for vehicles,so I paid $510 for sales tax.I just regestered my KJ here in CO,cost me $130,$20 was for a VIN verafication at a local dealership. Can't wait till I get my VA claim back,I should make at least 50% so my plates/tags are free here in CO. |

Yea, but sales tax is a one time thing right?? You don't pay that every year. We have sales tax here but you only pay that once. Veh. Reg in NY (Upstate anyway) is around $50 for a 2 year reg. You only pay for plates once and I don't remember how much they were (not much-one time charge). BUT if you get vanity plates they make you bend over and over and over again every time it renews. It is not good to get them in NY unless you feel sorry for The State and want to give them extra money. |

................................................ $920 was sales tax. A 10 year old car is taxed on it's new value here less some depreciation. They call them fees, no new taxes just fees. R |

Sometimes fee's are just a creative way to hide a tax. I read an article recently about some of the light rail project in some Cities (Phoenix, Portland, can't remember which). The city couldn't get public support to pass a tax to pay for the project so they hid the tax by adding a fee to everyones water, sewer, gas and electric bills. Their justification was since they had to physically move all those utilities to put the light rail corridor in, the users of those services had to pay for it. if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck.... |

How much was the excise tax, if you don't mind me asking? I'm not sure, but I think other than the excise tax, my registration is free (purple heart). Getting out of the army in a couple months and not looking forward to leaving alaska (no taxes) and going back to maine stealing all my money. |

Part of the reason is something called excise tax in Maine registrations. Most of it goes to the municipality in which the owner lives, this is the money they get that never shows up in the yearly budgets and they use it as play money. It starts out based on so many cents on a dollar tax, based on the Maroney sticker sales price. Then drops slowly each year for five years. Add in 25 bux for the actual plate or sticker for renewal, and town fees for the convenience of not having to go to a Motor Vehicle office, (far and few between, and usually very crowded, and staffed with extra slow workers), and it all adds up to big dollars. In Maine they are bleeding us dry with fees, that way they say no new taxes! I am WAG that a new car in Maine usually cost close to a grand in registration fees & taxes just to get on the road, and that would be for an average priced car say 15-20k. Home heating oil up here is bumping up against $3.80 a gallon here now, groceries are up about 30% since last year, milk, meat and fish are exotic food items now. Do not work or live in Maine, vacation here, visit here if you will, but do not live or work here. If my wife would budge from this state, I would be gone. Rant mode off. Maine-Taxationland, Massachusetts-Taxachusetts. |

Sales tax on autos is the norm in every state I have ever lived and the fees apply as well. Besides, all those fees are to prevent outsiders fom wanting to move "Down East" |

Just bought it. Yes, some fees are expected. It just hurts to have to pay for such a huge inefficient government as we have here in Maine. The CRD liberty is my effort to use less fuel. Lots of abandoned property in Maine. R |
