Should I bother replacing it during a tune-up? Seems like a dealer thing which I would rather avoid if possible.

The fuel filter sits on top of the gas tank, the tank needs to be dropped a few inches to replace it.It also has the pressure regulator built in so it's about a $130 for the filter.Jeep say's it's a lifetime filter,I have replaced mine twice and have only 61,000 miles,I don't believe in a lifetime filter.Gained mpg's after both changes, every other vehicle states to change the fuel filters at or around 30,000miles,I have always done them at 30,000 miles so why stop?

so this is something that should be done??? b/c there are a lot of things that places liek pepboys, hibdon's tires plus, 4wheelparts etc... have told me that i do not need to do, even though i was about to drop 100-200 at their store....

they all said front and rear diffs are perfect for 100,000+, meaning forever
they all said transmission fluid was perfect for lifetime
and they all said spark plugs are great for lifetime (i changed mine at precision tune auto care, and i have never noticed a difference?)

I am doing the plugs and diffs and transfercase this weekend. bought it used so I like to know what I have. may have to take it to a shop for the fuel filter though, especially if I can get a tweak up on my MPG's! rather give my money to the guys at the local shop then to the Big Oil companies. 8)

They say that about the fuel filters because they can't get them.If you wait till 100,000 miles to change any filter/fluid your asking for major trouble in my opinion.

axles are supposed to be done every 15-20k so you have already missed 2 schedualed fluid changes. Also our spark plugs are only good for 30,000.

i wouldnt replace it as often as a normal one but i would do it every 60k. They wouldnt tell you a fuel filter is lifetime just to replace it every 30k like a normal one but costs 5x as much, just doesnt make any sense.

anything that is designed to filter out crud can't really be lifetime (except maybe my AMSoil air filter 8) ) unless it's self cleaning or user cleanable.

I've been meaning to do this but is sound like a difficult job. I run my tank pretty close to empty quite often. It's been 77K and I haven't changed it.

On a rank from 1-10 how difficult is it? 1 - changing your oil and 10 - replacing your engine/rebuilding trans.

First you should never run a fuel injected vehicle below a 1/4 tank of gas,the electric fuel pump is in the tank and is cooled by the fuel that it sits in,below a 1/4 tank to fuel pump is not sumerged anymore, leading to early failure, plus you start to suck up all that crud on the bottom of you tank.

As for replacing the fuel filter it is about a 2 for me,a 4-5 for most others.Make sure you don't have a full tank of gas though.

Ill probably add the fuel filter to the list of things to do at 60k. That will be, ohh, 5 or so years down the road.

I think changing the axles every 15k is over kill unless you tow weekly or offroad alot. I believe its a good idea to change it out at 15k to remove all the break in metals then again around 60k if its a blacktop queen. I think tjkj changes those everyday after dinner so he doesn't agree. :)

I changed mine at 12k(then again at 18k to install a locker) and the fluid still looks as clear as it did the day it went in. Got 31k on them now.

Ill probably change them out again at 45k or so. Front pinion is leaking so I guess its got to be done before then. :?

this show you that not all parts stores are mechanics. heck anyone can walk in off the streets and get a job there. did they also say you never have to change the oil? I'm not ragging on you but the idiots that told you that. I'm a firm believer in changing ALL the fluids in my vehicles. this is one of the reasons my KJ has over 130k miles and still runs like the day i got it or better. sure u might be able to get away with it but why chance it when it doesn't cost that much to keep the fluids changed. i even run synthetics in everything.
