Yes I did search, but dial-up doesn't help with that :? Anyway my '03 Sport occassionly shudders into overdrive. Its like you are driving on one of those rumble strips at the side of the road. It first started in winter when it would be in 4hi, then now also in 2wd if I forget to lockout overdrive at low speeds, but not everytime; maybe two or three times a day. The Jeep has 114,000 klicks on it(70,000 miles). I'm taking it in to the dealer tomorrow and hope they find something as the warranty is over at 115,000 :(
Is this torque converter problems?

You are getting to that "milage" where other people have had to rebuild. Are the drive train parts still nice and tight? Drive shaft play etc?

There are a pack of clutches inside the transmission. These will wear out eventually.

Hopefully you changed the fluid as recommended and only used ATF+4?

Sounds like it would be a torque converter problem since its shuddering when its going into OD.

Worn clutch packs will usually go bad when it shifts 1-4th. It will slip.

Warranty FTW!! New clutches and converter going into my tranny.
Thank God I'm on good terms with the local service department, as I've had the Liberty less than a year and I doubt the fluid was ever changed; they said it was very dark and burnt. Odd, because it had no trailer hitch until last fall and has only towed a double snowmobile trailer about 4 times always with overdrive locked out. :?

How long does the shudder last? Mine has always shuddered once (one small jolt) right around 64 mph when it shifts into OD. I think this is normal...

It was as smooth as butter 'till a couple months ago. Shudder would then last about 2 seconds. Before that it had never been rough, jerked , or shuddered anytime. But yeah, pretty happy about the dealer coming through.

Very cool of your dealership to help you out like that... The shudder was probabaly exagerated by the extremely worn out Transmission fluid. A new Tranny should help your Liberty ride into a distant sunset now.
