Ok, I have only been on here for a while now, and i just thought i would ask. I know that everyone wants their jeep to be protected from every possible angle when off the beaten path. But how much is too much |

Yeah, more weight with armor, bumpers, winch, bigger tires all detract from mpg. J-just E-empty E-every P-pocket Bottom line, you want to play, you have to Pay. |

i know that my jeep came with all the skids on it, but my rl bumper and roof rack have taken 2 mpg off of my first gas mileage. i now get about 15-16 mpg |

Well since the KJ is a gas hog to begin with, there is no harm in adding a little extra to them. You really only need Skids and a Lift to get the job done IMO. The liberty is very capable in stock form for a vast majority of people, but the lift and skids are the key's to easier days in the woods. Of course that isn't to say that real bumpers, winches, lockers, jerry cans, racks, rails, gear, spare parts, extra people don't help either or enhance the experience... Evey Jeep is unique such that it's owner sets up the vehicle to appease an individuals taste and needs. They can get heavy, they can drink more gas and they are slow... But if you are happy in the end, than who cares! Long live the Liberty! |

But how much is too much That was me,like jeepjeepster said I have about all the armor and tools you could ever need on/in my KJ.It tips the scales at 5500lbs from 4000lbs totally stock.Adding armor will take mpg's away,it will also strain the OEM brake system and take it's toll on the engine/tranny/t-case/and diffs.I also have the 45RFE tranny which can handle alot more abuse then the newer 42RLE's.I have a crazy maintence routine in which I change all my fluids very often and check my KJ over with a fine tooth comb every 3000 miles.I need to with all the extra stress I'm placing on my KJ.
Here is my maintance intervals...... --Every 3k: -Engine oil+Filter -Rotate tires -Grease UBJ's/LBJ's --Every 6k: -Change t-case fliud --Every 12k: -Front and rear diffs(no matter what) -Wash air filter --Every 15k: -Flush tranny, change filters --Every 30k: -Spark plugs -PCV -Power steering fluid -Change fuel filter -Flush coolant, change t-stat,hoses,and radaitor cap --Every 60k: -Belt -Brake fluid |

If it wasn't for the skid plates & rock rails, my Jeep would no longer exist. Well worth the slightly lower gas mileage IMHO. |

I'm not doing the runs that some of the people here are - although I wish I could! - so I don't really need all the extra parts. That still doesn't stop me from wanting them though. They make the jeep look badA$$! I've got the front engine skid and I'll be going with a lift after I'm done University and have a job. Hopefully that'll be this summer... N |

I am not a hard-core off-roader, but those skids have helped me a couple times on the highway... like when that really lifted truck is infront of you and all of a sudden there is an animal or big rig tire (liked happend to me) and those skids just help you bounce you over them. Also, after I get my L.E.D. third brake light (for free!!!), I am going to get the skid row front and engine skid, but probably not the tranny, unless I have some extra free money around. And don't worry I get my free money legally, and can only use it on Amazon.com, but to give you an idea, I have been saving for the ~$130 (that's plus shipping) L.E.D. light for about 2 months. |

tjkj2002, that is an impressive maintenance routine. but I wonder why the Jeep Commander, which comes in at 5500 lbs, doesn't require the same change intervals. Wouldn't the commander be putting similar stress on its drivetrain components, especially since it is available with the same 3.7 V6 as our liberty's? Granted not all the parts are the same, but are its diff's/ t-case/transmission that much stronger that they can get away with extended fluid change intervals? |

The Commander was designed for that weight, the KJ was not.My '02 KJ has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 5600lbs,so I'm over that when I get my 200lbs butt in my KJ.

ill also agree that skids, rock rails, and bumpers are worth their weight in gold. as Edvalencia said if it wasnt for all these parts my KJ would no longer run thats for sure and would have one messed up body(worse than it is anyways |
