Hello all, I've been having this odd noise (clunk) lately when im in the middle of a low speed turn. I dont really notice it when driving slow with the wheel straight. I replace the stabilizer bar bushings yesterday and that def tightened things up a little up there but the clunk is still there.

I noticed today that when the car is in park with the engine on and i turn the wheel left and right a few inches each way quickly I can get the noise to happen. What could this be??? There must be some type of steering bushings or something like that possibly?

Thanks in advance
JD

Ahhh a Kumho brother! How you liking them so far?
Ive got about 10k on mine so far and they are still looking good. Fronts are the slightest bit rounded at the edges but backs are perfect. Will be rotating in a couple weeks.

So no suggestions about the noise eh?

My Jeep also makes the noise if you turn the wheel like that.-Normal

The clunking when turning could be a few things. Have you checked the balljoints and tie-rod ends?

I have no ideas about the midgets or the noises they make. mine are happy so they are silent, for now.

but the Kumhos....

This is probrably my 8th set between 2 KJ's and 3 XJ's. I love em. great off road and great on these mean streets.

I havent really checked anything yet. My jack died over the winter (seals dry rotted) and I wont be getting another till my birthday in a couple weeks. Just trying to compile a list of places to check beforehand.

I was afraid of the ball joints. The lowers were done about 15K ago under the recall. Uppers is for some reason what I think the issue it. I was trying to hold off on Als Uppers because of the cost but I may have no choice.

So for balljoints I just jack it up wheel off the ground and rock the tire in and out on the top and bottom right?

How about tie rods, how to check those? Same thing but go left and right?

Thanks

Jack up the Jeep by the frame or the control arm then use a pole under the tire to pick it up. That will check for play in the lower joint.

For the upper, I just take a large screw driver and stick it back into the coil spring. Use that to pry up and down on the upper a-arm to check for play.
