Post subject:  Hi-Lift Mounting Options?

So I got the 48" hi-lift, what are my mounting options. Dont have a roof rack, don't think that size will really fit under the rear seat well. don't have any aftermarket rear bumper.
Where can I put it to keep it outside the vehicle and out of the way. Is there a way to mount it to the factory roof rails, or will the mounting brackets they have (normally used on a metal TJ, LJ, ect. bumpers) work on our cheapo plastic bumpers?

hmmmmmm yea i guess i'll have to "fold over" the top point. I would like to mount it outside, although it would be exposed to the elements. maybe i'll look at a custom fab job coming out from where the spare mounts to rear door locating it vertically next to the tire. but giving clearance for the glass...hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

how do all you guys have internet in Moab anyway?

you can have it live under the seat no problem even with the top angle piece sticking straight.

is it okay to leave it out in the rain/snow/any other elements?
won't it rust if you leave it outside in rain or snow?

Sure the salt and snow will mess with it eventually. You need to keep the cross pins lubed, out in the weather makes that difficult.

Why would you want to keep it on your KJ all the time anyway?

I got mine for the garage and for trails. NO plans to haul it around 365 days of the year.

OK RV Park provides "free" Wi Fi. I am sure it was been added into the overall daily fee when they last raised their rates.

well i'm thinking up of 2 different mounts to keep them on the outside of the vehicle, both will be lockable.

Intersting Idea man. I was actually going to buy a hi lift. I also wanted to have it mounted on the KJ some place. I have been thinking where and how to do it. Maybe between the both of us we can come up with something.

There is a kick stupid way to keep people from steeling it.

Hook up 220 line voltage to the KJ so who ever touches it, well lets just say they will do it only once! Once!

1. as stated about will have metal brackets that come from where the spare tire mount and rear door meet, extend out and position the jack vertically next to the spare tire.

2. fab a mount, similar to a hitch extender, but doesn't really extend out. Weld a 4 foot long piece of metal to that with mounting points so the jack will mount horizontally from a hitch.

I can try to draw this stuff in paint or something to get a better idea.

Something like this?

Those Hi Lift mounts are a great idea, the ones on the spare tire mount. But you have to keep in mind that the spare tire mount was designed to hold the weight of the spare tire. Wonder what adding 40 lbs to that will do. Not to mention that it is an extended 35-40 lbs, adding tension to the mount. If it were closer to the rear swing door it might be able to take it better. maybe it sits there with no problems in the drive way, but what happens at 40 mph and you hit a pot hole?

LOTS of stress being put on something designed to hold a spare tire only. Besides I keep seeing posts ablout peoples rear doors rattling. Might be a connection here.

I will not be putting my Hi-Lift on the spare tire mount. MAYBE the Gecko can have a mount adapted to it. Maybe some place else. I agree, that burring it under the rear seat makes it difficult to get to if and/or when you need it. But any mount should be a temporary mount for the trail or camping and short term but stable transport.

I have an idea.... i will post more later....

Here is my Idea,

I have the mopar rear hitch. I was looking under the jeep yesterday and trying to figure out a way to possiable mount it under and along with the rear hitch. This way it is not giving added sterss like Woody was explaining and very well make total sence. Insted of having it out in the open and stuff like that. It will be under the rear bumpber but accessable at any time.

(If wheeling and concern about scrapping with it under the bumpber, take it off when in the trail.)

I am going to work on this and post any updates and hopefully a picture when it is done.

Intresting for you guys?

OK FIRST OFF GUYS,
This is just an IDEA. A little photo shop but not clean. Fast job to get and give an idea of what I might think will work best for our KJ's for a Hi-Lift mount.
If it goes uner the bumpber, it will take up your clearance in the rear if your stock. if your lifted, will not be much of a deal but still loose some clearance. I was thinking that having it on the back bumpber it self may work out better.

Let me know what you think and give me any ideas you may have.

I am not sure you can get the space you need UNDER the bumper. But you are possibly on to something.

They make those hitch extensions with the step plates on them. Why not go that route and fab a horizontal mounting plate with some bracing, that will allow it to ride on the 4" extension and actually ride outside the rear bumper, but still give you a place to put a shackle for recovery and/or tow strap?

http://www.etrailer.com/pc-EXTENDER~HE06.htm

Something like this with a piece of 90 angle steel welded on top, notched on the sides and welded to the extension for bracing. then some bolts welded so you can bolt the Hi-Lift to the angle stock and have it ride just under the spare but outside tyhe bumper.
