Post subject:  Sound Coming From Rear End

Hey guys:

I drive a 2003 liberty sport, 5 speed. I've been noticing an odd sound coming from my rear end everytime i shift into gear. it seems like it only happens when i first take off; 1st, 2nd, etc. it is a hollow sound.... sort of a rubbing sound.

i looked under my rear end and notice a rubber bushing on top.... what does that do?

also, i have about 48,ooo miles on it? do you think i have to gresse up my rear end? my buddy suggested that, he drive an 98 wrangler.

i am not much of an mechanic so any suggestions or insights would be helpful.

thanks everyone

If it only does it once when you first drive it after it sits Im guessing its just rust on the rotors. Mine does this all the time, more so if its rained or its really humid.

The sound doesnt seem to be coming from my rotors. there is no visible rust on them, and i drive it everyday about 100,iles or more...

any other suggestions?

does it do it ALL the time. Do you ONLY notice it as you shift?

Have you EVER carried an extremely heavy load in your KJ before?

IF the engine noise is drowing it out as you accelerate and you only hear it when the engine is realxed as you shift then you MIGHT need to check your rear axel bearings.

Can make that sound if they are about to go.

Carrying heavy loads over the rated amount can really stress those axel bearings and make then overheat and fail.

Jack up the booty end, spin the wheels, in neutral, feel or hear a grinding or other sound besides brake rub, pull the axels and look in the diff and axel bearings.

good luck.

i havent really pulled a heavy load. i pulle dmy budy out of the mud once...

as for the axel bearings, how much do they go for?

The bearings them selves are not going to be too expensive. It is the labor to install that will kill ya, if anything.

Troy (tjkj2002) can answer that better. He should chime in on this sooner or later.

Bearings would probably howl all the time.

I had that problem, but then I let the tied and bound hooker out and it stopped

That is why i asked if it stopped or was just disguised by the engine noise after shifting.

I cant tell if the sound is still there at higher speeds. it seems like it is only when i first take off in everygear... except reverse.

but today going into work; on the highway, over small bumps i've noticed it , (or what i thought it was)

As always have you checked the rear u joints, if its kind of a squeak , squeak etc as you take off it could be it. Also you can not tell just by grabbing it and trying to shake it, first thing I always check if they are stock

I would say the first place to look would be the U-joints!

If the upper ball joint is shot that would cause the rear end to freely move. FWIW, I drove on bad u-joints for a couple of weeks before changing them.
