| Post subject: | Front Drive shaft AGAIN! --->FIXED!!! YAHOO. |
Yesterday I had to bring my KJ back to a dealer for the same problem that I had less than 12 months ago. This was not the original dealer who did the first repair. I had some hard knocking noise from my driver’s front drive shaft. The dealer called me this morning and said, you have the same problem that you had 9 months ago. CV's and drive shaft need to be replaced. I said ok cool it should be covered for the 1 year or 12k mile warranty repair. He said it should be but it is not. I asked him to explain why this is. He told me it is because of your lift and tires. He said the Moab rims were not ment for the KJ and the 245/75 either. I told him that I put them on Monday. He said well there you go that was your problem. I then said to him, your telling me that in 3 days I blowout my CV's and drive shaft on the same side? YES he said. Then I asked, well tell me this, how come my passenger’s side NEVER FAILED YET? He had nothing to say about it. So I brought it to another dealer that was in my area. So the KJ limped it's way to the other dealer. (It seems that The dealer just looks for way to deny any repair under warranty. ) OH YEA, the last time I brought it in for that problem, I had just gotten done wheeling with some N-E KJ guys and the dealer said well you were 4wheeling and that caused the problem. Well I could not lie about that because it had more mud on it then the trail. I think they messed up of it was a defective part. I really did not do much wheeling after they replaced the last time. So I do not know why it went bad again unless it was defective in the 1st place. Who knows. |

Do you mean the axle shaft? The driveshaft would not be affected by they lift as the angles would not change. Just the extra stress of larger tires. |

The lift has ZERO to do with the front driveshaft. You may want to remind the dealer the KJ has independent front suspension. Dealer tried the same sh*t with me but I still got it fixed under warranty. |

I just replaced both front axles for $168.00 from Napa..... Quit going to dealerships and learn how to do your own repairs, they're just going to rip you off for high priced parts and labor and find ways to deny the warranty any ways. |

the only reason why I went back was because they did it before and hoping to get covered. I should have brought a box of condoms with me! |

Jeep Dawg, ask the service manager to post this information in a technical service bulletin or if he has the TBS with specific information on all liberty's with 2.5" lifting, 31' tire size, moab wheels voiding CV axles. See what he say's. Good luck. |

Rims have nothing to do with cv's at all. Tires wont either unless you spend alot of time in 4wd offroad. |

I think that excuse is on PAGE 16 Section B.S. Item 666 of the " What to tell customers when you want to *crew them" They have updated it in 2008 but I think thats where you will find it. |

Not true, heavier rims/tires will place added stress on the whole drivetrain---engine,tranny,t-case,diffs,driveshafts,CV shafts, brakes, wheel bearings, ball joints, and bushings. If lifted they can deny warrenty to all effected area's,which is the entire drivetrain and suspension,it's sucks but they can do that, seen it done and have voided warrenty's myself for any aftermarket items on vehicles when I worked at a dealer.I've even denied warrenty to convertables for going through high pressure carwashes and then there tops leaking, the convertable tops are not made to seal water pressures over 22psi.

Do you really think moabs place more wear and tear on cv joints in 2wd tjkj. I never said they didnt put more wear and tear on bj's, bearings, or any other drive-train part. |

Jeepjeepster wrote: Do you really think moabs place more wear and tear on cv joints in 2wd tjkj. Yes they do since the front is always "locked" and spinning no matter what,2wd or 4wd,though it's mostly the lift that does in the CV's.

Yeah, it's locked and spinning, but it's not under a load from the engine. Either way, his dealer is feeding him a steaming plateful of hose hockey...but it's not hard to change a CV shaft. It takes less time to do it than it does to sit on the internet and talk about the dealer denying a warranty. Gotta pick your battles, and this is probably one you won't win... |

That doesn't make any sense. There's absolutely 0 difference in 2 wheel drive, whether you have wheels that weigh 10 lbs or 100 lbs, the wheels are turning the CVs, not the other way around. |

my thing is that I only had the new tires and moabs on for 2 days. I heard noise for a while now but I thought it was the old tires. but when The new tires went on I still kinda heard it but not too bad untill i hit 75 the other morning. I am figuring they installed a defective part last time. If it were the stress of the lift then how come my passangers side has not gone bad? how could 2 drivers side go in 1 year? |

Jeep Dawg, I definitely feel your pain because I'm also on my third set of CV's and I'm at 130,000 miles. I'm beginning to think I'll be going through this every 11 months at the rate I put mileage on. Frustrating is an understatement. If anyone has a solution, I'd like to know. I've owned Jeeps all my life and this is crazy. |

By the way, this last time I heard the tell-tale clicking on only the driver's side so had dealer change that side out......within days of leaving the dealership, the passenger side went out, too, so I wouldn't be surprised if the same happens to you in the near future. |
