yeah, i know, we're all gettin ripped off at the pump. but i got a new one, and i guess i can't do anything about it!
my build sheet claims that i have an 18 gal gas tank- well, i don't. i have run the renegade out of gas, pulled it to the station, and was able to cram 13 gallons into the tank- i guess that makes it officially a 12 gal tank, as i have never heard of a 13 gal. this has been confirmed by many times running it down to at or near empty and fitting 11 to 12.5 gal max, over a 5 year period and 90,000 miles.
well, the other day, i run it down to 'e' as usual, go to fill up, lo and behold, all of a sudden 15.5 gallons fit!!!
not only do i have to pay $4 per gallon, but i have to pay for 3.5 gallons that i know don't fit into my tank!!!
if my build sheet were accurate, i could maybe make the case, but alas-
i get robbed again...
anybody got any ideas?

depending on the year you do have a 18 gallon or so, but the light does come on with 2 or 3 gallon at least in it, I have put 15/16 in mine at times so dob't think you were ripped off, just was a little more thirsty

Running my 04 w/ a 19.5 gallon tank to "0 miles till empty on the evic" which is like 22 miles past the empty light I can put at most 15.6 or 15.7

Man, my 05 kj has 20.5 gallon capacity. When I fill it up I almost always use over 18 gallons.

If you are questioning the accurance of the pump?
Put in exactly 10 gallons. Price is 4.00 per gal.
Pump should read 40.00. If it doesn't, the pump, is not calibrated
correctly.

The amount and price will probably line up on the pump, but the actual volume that you are getting may differ. Unless you can see into your tank, you wont know. The best bet would be to take a jerry can down there and fill it to the known maximum. It if costs more to fill it, or if the pumps claim to have delivered X gallons you will be able to actually see the problem. Basically, if you take a 5 gallon can down there, put exactly 5 gallons in the can according to the pumps, you'll be able to see if you were shorted any gas as well as be able to see the difference in the price.

Agree there.
The volume of most of the newer pumps are pretty accurate. 5 gals are pretty much
5gals. Older pumps are really bad on this. At 75K for new pumps most of the Mom
and Pops are staying with what they have. They are not getting rich on all this price war.
The oil Execs are the ones bringing in the cash.
Back on subject. Check the volume, and check the price. Biggest error is not the volume
but the price calculator itself.
Just what I have saw is all

Since the price of gas has the additional 9/10th on the end, if gas is $4.00/gal and you pump exactly 10 gal, the price should be $40.09.

WELL, you guys are missing the point here...
i have actually run this thing out of gas, to where it would not run, towed it to the station, filled it up, and about 13 gallons of gas fit. no more.
now all of a sudden, 15.5 fits? i wasn't even actually empty yet- computer said i still had about 9 miles!!!
i aint no math-a-majician, but this doesn't add up.

btw- this was a shell station.

When a fuel injected vehicle "runs out of gas" it isn't really out of gas,not completely. There is still fuel in the bottome of the tank since the fuel pickup on the fuel pump is not touching the bottom of the tank to prevent sucking up all the junk that will collect in the tank.As soon as the puel pump can not maintain a constant 40-50psi air will enter the sytem and the engine will shut down.It varies on the vehicle where that fuel pickup exactly sits.

I only once ever ran my KJ down till the low fuel light came on,I pumped 17 gallons into the tank and I have a '02 with a 18.5 gallon tank, usually I never let my KJ get below 3/4 tank and never under a 1/2 tank since under a 1/4 tank of fuel the fuel pump is no longer sumerged in fuel which cools it and leads to early fuel pump failure not to mention sucking the junk out of the bottom of the tank that plugs the fuel filter faster.

Obviously, for whatever reason, the KJ was not out of gas. Or 13.x gallons did not fill it up.One of the two conditions must be wrong. It would be like having Superman & Clarke Kent in the same room.

I'd check for an issue that is not allowing all of the gas out of the tank, such as something clogging the pick-up. Far fetched? Maybe. But far less than someone sneaking a new, higher capacity, but still incorrect tank under the jeep.

Years ago, I dropped the tank on a friend's just-bought-used Corsica to replace the fuel pump in it only to find a shop rag still inside the tank.

You don't have to drop the tank on a Corsica to replace the pump:D has an access hole underneath the back seat.

What is it exactly that tells the pump that the tank is full? it's the nozzle on the pump sensing pressure right?

Same here. I ran mine around 30miles or so past '0 miles to empty' and got around 16.5-17 in my 19.5 gallon tank.

On our 94 ZJ, we pulled into the gas station with the evic saying 3miles left and we got right at 23 gallons in the 23 gallon tank that it has. Yup, we have put a fuel pump in that Jeep. :)

most of what y'all are sayin is you fit LESS into your tanks than the actual tank size. i managed to fit MORE in than the tank size. it has never held more than just under 13 gal no matter how low i ran it. i'm claiming that the pump counted more than fits into the tank.
i don't know how jeep/daimler/chrysler managed to give me such a small tank, but they did...
