Post subject:  An Interesting Observation

After putting on my new tires (size listed Sig line) I noticed that driving with the cruse on, flat land, the torque converter was constantly shifting in and out. It would not hold on leval ground! If I switched the overdrive off it was fine. So, I took off the roof rack and all the skid plates, except the gas take skid, because of the trailer hitch. No more problem. The MPG went from 12.3 to 13.9 also.

It might help also if you have the pinion reset for the new tires. I know mine was acting funny till I had it reset...drives much better now. Just a thought...

What did you have reset on the pinion? .....the angle?

The electronic pinion reset for the revs per mile. They use the scan tool in the OBD connection to adjust it. Mine was set at the factory at somewhere around 750 Revs. I had them reset it to 682 or so. Shift points are much better and it goes into overdrive at a little higher speed and does not fall on it's face trying to accelerate. The ECU uses the electronic speedo for various engine and trans management variables.

That sounds like a good idea. What year is yours? I read on here somewhere that you can't do it to certain years. I don't remember if my 2005 can or not. These tires are 678 revs per mile.

I have an '04. I do know that AndySRT has an '05 CRD and he had his adjusted no problem. My dealer charged 1/2 hour labor ($42) to do it. Took the tech like 20 minutes (including other tech's looking at a "lifted" KJ...like they never saw one before :? ).

Its doing that because you need to re-gear. When you change the size of the tire that much and add that much weight the stock gearing has a hard time keeping up.

I haven't regeared, and I don't have any issue holding gear at any speed between 55-70 (where I would normally run cruise control). May be because my 32's are p-metric and weigh a lot less than your average LT tire.

it's been pretty windy in FL. Are you sure that's not the problem? The Owner's Manual recommends turning off the OD if there are strong headwinds. I always had the problem when I drove I 80 through WY.

Has FL's wind been THAT high? Everyone that was around when they designed that road told them not to go through where they did between Laramie and Cheyenne. That's deadly wind, there!

Yes, I know I need to re-gear. I just thought it was interesting was all. The winds are going about 35mph and usually are cross winds because the road is only about 1 mile from the ocean and runs parallel to it.

I do plan on getting 4.10's as soon as I can. As soon as I can equates to Uncle Sam's check from taxes getting here!

Same here, 3:73's with 32's and mine are LT's. Mine doesn't shift down until I hit grades, level no problems. Mine is also recalibrated for 677 RPM.

Used to live in Casper. Don't miss that wind. Had to pedal a bike down a mountain once. The headwind was so stiff the bike would stop if I did not pedal. Also used to live in Florida. It was not nearly so windy (except hurricane or storm). Nice thing about Florida, if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes.

I went to the dealer to get the spedo calibrated and they said they would have to ask star because they did not know-- and get this STAR told them it could not be done. I don't really care anyway the spedo is dead on now and the odo is off in my favor 10%. So that warranty of theirs will last a little longer.
