I had just gotten a 2005 Jeep Liberty, nothing fancy on it, basic power everything, Wrangler ST tires, no skid plates or anything like that... But what i want to know is what fun can i have with it off-roading wise?? I know that there must be someone out there with a stock jeep that goes off-roading, my question is for them what do you guys do to have fun with your jeep? what capabilities do i have with my jeep, i know the tires are not the greatest... the only thing that seems like i can do with it is go across fields and dirt roads :P, and not only that i dont want to do things that will damage the undercarriage or damage/scratch the exterior , I dont really plan on getting any lift kit or anything like that for it, the only thing that i may get one day is fog lights.

Folks go offroad with the stock Liberty all the time. Even with the crappy tires. So that is not a problem.

Just don't go offroad alone. That is the worse thing you can do. Second is expect some damage. At the very least you can expect tree limbs to scratch your paint eventually or possibly crack your windshield one day. That is just the risk of living I am afraid.

Third, you may want to look at tow hooks (front and rear) and skids. If you go offroad you will get stuck. Tow hooks are inexpensive and you can install them yourself. I know you said you did not want to buy anything, but they are very needed if you get stuck. Otherwise you have to pull yourself from locations that may cause vehicle damage, much more expensive than the tow hooks. The skids are also recommended. You don't have to spend money on the fancy ones, you can get Mopar ones. The lower the vehicle is to the ground, the more you need them and a Liberty is about as low as it gets while still maintaining the ability to go offroad. If you don't have rocks or logs where you are going, then you may be ok without the skids (but there are not alot of places with no rocks or logs and you never know what is beneath mud).

With those mods you should be able to go many places and do most of the easy off-road trails you find. If mileage is a concern, you can also remove the skids when not off road so as to increase mileage.

Get skids. If nothing else, get skids. Then you can do a ton more things compared with no skids.

Where do you live? That would help to know what is out there wher eyou live.

Also did the climb up to telephone poles to the top, stop to tilt on three wheels as you drop to the down hill...was pulling pieces of telephone pole out of the underbelly for a while...no skids or sliders at the time

hang with a local jeep club. They hold runs and this is how I started. I run alone mostly but I don't recommend it. I know the areas I go out to and the trails are marked in difficulty. you can run 2's some 3's but you will scrape on rocks. this is why skids are used. most jeepers w solid front axles consider us mallcrawlers. Get use to the idea, find other KJ's. Like most of us we have been bitten by the Jeep bug and it bite's hard on the wallet. Start your maintenance now with a good quality synthetic motor oil and gear oil. Ask questions. My 2c. (This is a small vid of Lone Star Jeep Club at BMRA. http://video.yahoo.com/watch/2101627/6610539 These are the easy trails.)

at least get skid plates & some better tires, then sit down in the drivers seat push the skinny pedal on the right & do sweet burnouts in the mud or sand which ever you choose

Spend the $ now for the hooks and basic skids before you damage your vehicle. Then find a group that appreciates just getting out and getting LOST to cool places that would require a 4x4. Take your Jeep camping & hiking, etc. and you will find yourself hooked and addicted. If you were here in Cali I would get you out to some awesome places that you never would have imagined you could go in your stock KJ.

Oh and BTW, the most important thing of all.... Please TREAD LIGHTLY and have fun.

Welcome, first of all. You should get front and rear recovery points, like a rear hitch and front tow hooks. Get some skids to protect the underbelly. Get some nice all terrain tires like the BFG AT and you would be good to go. Be aware that in any off road situation you might scratch some paint, but that just builds character. Once you start modifying you jeep you might not want to stop as well. Be aware  Be careful, and safe. If you do go out by yourself, if you don't feel comfortable with the situation you are looking at or about to get in, don't do it. It can turn into a nightmare real quick. Been there done that too many times, still haven't learned my lesson. Have fun! :D

Go and enjoy your Jeep.
Mine is far from stock now, But when I had my KJ stock I went wheeling all the time. You just need to watch your self. Get to know the underside of the KJ. Know where the most expensive stuff is. Make sure you go sloe and take your time.
If you are not going to do the mods like most of us here have already done, The most important thing you should do is get the skid plates. At least you will protect the underside of your KJ.

I went months with out skids on my KJ and I never smashed anything under the KJ. I was always careful where I was going, either up and over or though.

Now I am pretty good to go with my skids, lift and bigger wheels. Oh yea and the most important thing, EXPERIANCE

I always enjoy those that say "yes I wheeled everywhere with no skids and never had a problem" But remember it only takes that one time and it could be a $2500 trip, in my opinion until you get skids, and tow points do others a favor and stay on the main road.
Not to be a jerk, but thats just the way it is. wasted more than one day helping someone that went where they should not of been. No matter how careful you are it will only be a matter of time!

I have a 2002 Limited Edition Liberty. I think there are stock skid plates on these models, would I be correct in saying that?? If so, what are they protecting on the Limiteds??

A 2002 should have at least an engine skid. The best-case scenario is that you also have the optional off-road package, which would mean you also have the Mopar skids for the transfer case and fuel tank. But that option was hard to find on the limiteds, and even even if you have it, your transmission is still naked. Are you the original owner? No telling what someone else might have added to it if you're not.
