He everybody, just had my local shop change the rear seal on the front diff saturday. Now I'm gettign a humming sound from the front end at speeds between 60 & 70 MPH. There is no vibration, shimmy or any change in the the preformance of the libby except this humm. Any ideas what it could be and am I doing damage by driving it ?
Thanks !

I'd double check to see if they put enough gear oil into the diff when they redid the seal. Or get them to double check it, and also ask what type of lube they used.

yeah I took it back this afternoon and they pulled the cover and refilled the diff again. they said the oil was perfectly clean. took it for a ride on the highway and same humm ! i dont know someone at the shop said it might be a bad beraring in the diff. I hope not, I dont see how changing the oil and seals could cause a bad bearing to suddenly show up.

By chance is it only when you're gently on the gas, coasting?

OK MAN I had this same problem only a few days ago.

First off, after you hit the high speeds, when coming to a slow stop between 10 - and under do you hear any other noises ?

If you do, then it may not be a bearing. It just very well may be your front axl.

Does this noise happen at a constant? or at certain speeds?
Mine was a certain speeds. 60 - 75 mph. Then again at 10 MPH or less. from 12- mph to about 60 mph I heard nothing until thoes magic speeds were met.

I only notice it between 60-70 mph and there are no other unusal noises. And as I speed up the noise becomes louder.

Here are a few things that you can try out to narrow down your issue:

Trouble shooting vibrations and or noise from drive shaft:
Before assuming anything, Make sure that your tires are properly set and the correct PSI, and balanced. Take the Jeep to the speed in which the roughness/noise is pronounced. Shift the tranny into the next lower gear and bring the engine speed to the same point where the noise is heard. If the vibration occurs at the engine speed/rpm regardless of which gear it is in, the driveshaft is NOT at fault, since the driveshaft speed varies.

If the problem decreases or is eliminated at the same speed, you may want to take a look at:
Bent or dented driveshaft, worn U joints, bearings, build up of dirt and grease on the shaft, companion flange out of balance, missing weights, loose or worn wheel bearing

This is a few things you might want to try. If it is under warranty just bring it in and let them figure it out on their dime.
If your out of warranty, then I would get ready to dish out some bucks if you have any CV/Half shaft or even the front drive shaft.
For your sake I hope it is just a wheel bearing. Not as expensive and kinda easy to do.

That was my first problem 2 weeks ago. I only heard the noise at 60-ISH MPH and got worrse when I hit 75 MPH. At that point it started to sound like a helicopter.
Thats when I nkew it was my front drive shaft.
Also at the same time when I was at the slowing down speeds 10 mph and slower, I had another noise which I thought was all related. But after they replaced the front drive shaft, then the other noise (slowing ) was still there. Then I knew I had a diff and front axl problem.
Now I am all good to go.
I had it replaced less than 10 months ago and it went on me again.
It was about 850 to replace by the dealer back then.

It is easy to replace. Just cost alot from Mopar

My bumper makes a nice hum but it's cause my bumper has very little support now. It actually hums in a 60mph wind when It's not even running so I know that's all it is. Got any broken plastic rivets?

No broken rivets that I know of. I find it awfuly strange that the noise started right after they worked on the front diff.

Hmmmm...no additive in the gear oil perhaps? You'd think they'd have put it in though. I know you said they dumped it and refilled, but with what?

Driveshafts aren't really that expensive anymore. Autozone has new shafts for about $150 per side and takes a few hours...including the casual refreshment breaks. I've got a pretty new set (30 miles at best on them) laying in the garage. If it turns out to be the half-shafts, there's a lot of help to be given from these guys...and I could part with some shafts pretty easily. The pain, for me anyway, was finding the retention clips. They're different on both sides, and they kept giving me the driver side clip when I needed a pink passenger side unit. My "humm" was the actual drive shaft in the diff was worn because the shaft wasn't put on with the correct clip. That shaft was expensive and wasn't worth continual fixing something going wrong up front.

Turns out it was the crush sleeve and bearings, whrn they put the input yoke back on they over tightened it and damaged the sleeve and bearings.

I was thinking it may be that since they replaced the pinion seal.

Mine is leaking and I worry about getting ti fixed for that very reason. :?
