Post subject:  whacky speedo?

i was driving this morning with a full load of ppl and trunk full and all of a sudden the speedometer was jumping up and down for a little while then finally fixed itself. it happened again after we made a bridge out in the middle of a jungle. i also feel like i'm bottoming out in the rear end like i lost the shocks... well i guess i did bottom out a few times going over pretty small bumps in the road maybe going 35 at the fastest(highest speed limit here is 45 :( ) anybody know whats going on?

Pull the speedo sensor out of the top of the rear diff and check to see if it has anything on it. If you get some metal shavings or a little rtv on it it will affect the reading.

i had a similar issue, but it was the tach jumping up and down. The crankshaft position sensor went bad. The KJ threw a bunch of misfire codes as well. When the sensor really goes bad, the engine will stall.

Some times the wires going into the sensor on the rear diff get rubbed/shorted out.

As for the bottoming out, the rear shocks may be getting worn and all that extra weight doesnt help at all. I dont remember my stock suspension bottoming out at all but Ive never had a load of people in it.

i'm pretty sure the wires are the source of your problem, i had the same issues, when you look at the wires they look ok, but when you pull them it's only the insulation attached to the sensor and the wires are cut inside, i took them apart, soldered, insulation tape and connect again, problem solved, no problems in a year.

I experienced the same issue, so I examined the wires leading to the speed sensor sitting atop the rear diff. One of the wires was indeed exposed through the insulation and even to the point where it was pretty much severed

I removed the pigtail (thingy that gets plugged into the speed sensor), took it apart, fed it new wires, then shrink wrapped the wires to prevent any moisture from getting in contact with anything its not supposed to.

I also made some slight adjustment to the emergency brake cable housing/tube that was rubbing against the wires all these years causing the issue to begin with. No pics, but it was not a hard job at all. Prolly the easiest fix I've done on this thing.
