It will stay running if hold the throttle only. Engine runs smooth when I do this, but let of the throttle and it dies. I am thinking vacuum leak or dirty idle air control valve making it stick. Any ideas? No check engine light. Any advice for cleaning the IACV? Thank you!!!

have you done any battery work recently? If you leave your battery disconnected for a while the PCM will lose its memory and will not hold the throttle at idle.

If you have switched batteries, or left the terminal off for a while you will need to keep the engine running manually for a about 2-8 minutes.

If that doesnt work, check the ground for the PCM.

No, no battery disconnect, although my ground lug on the battery is covered in corrosion. Will be cleaning that also.

yea that could be a very real possibility. or there is a flat ground wire that connects to the body. either one could be a fault.

How old is your battery? I had the same problem when my battery was going bad. It would start but I had to keep the RPM's up or it would die. Replaced and the problem was fixed.

Thanks you guys. I cleaned up the corrosion on the ground side of the battery. That fixed the idle problem. I topped of the battery and shut the hood. I go out the next morning and battery was dead. Rode the Harley to work and that night, load tested the battery after charging it. DEAD. So a new battery and all is good. I got six years of service out of that factory battery. Pretty darn good!!!

Stock batteries are dropping like flies right now. This is the second battery from 2002 that has failed in a week. More to come?

Considering most auto batteries are only ment to be good for 3 years,4 at the most, your pushing your luck after that, your going to see a bunch going from '02,'03,'04,and '05 KJ's.

6 years from an original battery amazes me, never got that much life from previous Ford or GM products.

I feel the only reason my battery finally died is because I stopped driving the KJ on a regular basis. The sudden change in charging and useage habbits I think led to its demise. Oh well... I'm all Optima'd up now.
