I saw a post on here several weeks ago about locking gas caps, however, I do not think we really had any numbers on how many people use them and if they are really worth it. So, how many of you use them? I have the poll running for 5 days. |

i know in Maryland for a while you didn't need to have a locking gas cap on your fuel filler, the thieves actually drilled a hole directly into your gas tank and got the fuel that way. they were quite crafty! |

Locking gas caps are standard in UK. |

this is why I would say why bother if they want it they will get it and it is way cheeper to make it seem easy so the take it out the way it goes in This way you are out maybe $50 rather than several 100 on a new fuel tank |

Thieves usually are. It is dificult to get the gas out of the filler neck and I would rather they struggle w/ that for a while and maybe give up instead of drill my tank. A few gallons of gas is cheaper than replacing the tank. |

In my experience, hoodlums like to play with the cap, not thieves. I have a locking one so no one can put anything do into there. I haven't heard of anyone stealing gas for the longest time. |

My Trooper and my Accord both had a lock on the gas door. what a pain in the butt. I never got used to it in either one...I normally leave my keys in the car when I gas up...and for a grand total of 5 years, EVERY TIME I got gas (not that often on the 40 mpg Accord, quite frequently in the 12mpg Isuzu) without fail, I'd have to go back to the car and get my keys to open the stinking gas door. I don't want a locking gas cap, because of the inconveniences it would cause for me. I also don't park in shady areas, so that helps:P |

I have one and I put it on way before gas prices went up. My thought at the time was that it might prevent someone from putting something in. As far as stealing gas it is not a safety blankie as stated, since they can drill a hole in my skid and into the tank if they wanted to get gas out I guess. But maybe they will see the skid and go to an easier target. That said, I havn't heard of gas thefts going on here in town anyway. I live in a real small town (1,800 people) but that doesn't mean it won't/can't happen here. |

Drilling through the new plastic tanks is a very common & growing method for stealing gas. The reason crooks do it from below is it is much more "hidden" then standing beside the car & getting the siphon going. Some newever vehicles are also fairly hard to siphon. |

Just buy a Kilby gas tank skid, and then sit back and see how long it takes them to try and drill through it, if ever.. |

You can't siphon gas out of the filler neck-- it has a guard to prevent that. So the locking cap will only keep people from putting crap in. |

Besides drilling the gas tank, one pair of what's in the pic below makes very short work of any locking gas cap.
Point is if a thief really wants it he/she will get it,might as well make it simple, and not requiring breaking anything, for them to get it.Cheaper to fix that way,$50 loss in gas is much better then $50-$150 tow and then a $650 gas tank. |
