There was someone that was looking into replacing the black plastic rocker panel with one made of steel. Does anyone know if it was done or not? Here is a picture of mine with the area circled in red. You have to look real close to see the red! Terry

Now that is something that I have been thinking about doing for some time now. I don't like the fact with others you loose valuable ground clearance. |

You don't lose any more ground clearance with the RL Super Skinks as those sliders in the pics above, just remember the "frame rails" (unibody) hang way done from the pinch weld so the Super Skinks bottom is still higher then the "frame rail" of the KJ unibody,no lost clearence.

I pmed the guy about how he did these. I am definitely going to copy the crap out of these. They are the best ones I have ever seen. |

800 to buy, not to make yourself. Plus since these are a flat piece of steel that cover the underside of the kj, they seem less likely to hang up on anything than a set of bars extending from the frame. I think the clearance people are talking about is the 2" or so, that the bars hangs past the body panel below the doors. That clearance is not ground clearance exactly, but these custom ones don't stick out past the body paneling, so they clear easier on rocks like these: http://www.rocklizardfabrications.com/SuperSkink2.jpg I will say that because the RL bars stick out more, they offer better protection for the body of the kj. |

You will still get all kinds of gunk in-between them and the frame/unibody. You'll have to remove them often to get it all cleaned out. As said before, your door is a dead duck for rocks and stumps without protection keeping them away from the door panels. I love the look but...... they won't protect you here in Colorado. |

The junk collecting would be a problem. I know I spray the heck out of my skid plates but when I take them off there is still a ton of sand and muck on them. I would hate to have that stuff holding water up against the KJ's body. As it stands right now my plastic covers are 18 1/2" off the ground. I would hate to loose ANY of that. It stands tall! Terry |

If I had those on and the trails I have done here, I would have damaged my door a long time ago. When you get off-camber and tippy along the rock out-croppings, you need those bars out there to keep the rocks from your door. |

1/4" and they're flat? I managed to bend a 2x2x3/16" tube, a 1/2" square tube and a 1x2" tube all in one hit. I think those are the sizes of RL skinks, anyway. I doubt a 1/4" sheet would have protected my doors as well. I like the looks of that and everything but, it needs bends and/or more bracing. I realize there's a tube along the pinch seam but what kind of bracing does it have to the frame? And then there's still the issue of mud, water, weeds, sticks, et cetera getting stuck in there. |

The Screaming Lizard thingy looks super-cool in a far-out kinda way, but the RL offering is better if you want to actually protect your Jeep. And haven't we learned a lesson about giving money to unproven vendors who show up on here???? |

I really don't remember mentioning any brands. But I have seen ones that hang under where these seem to be located. If I am seeing them correctly. Also I have not said I would buy these from any vender, I am really thinking about fabbing my own. I love Rock Lizard products and I bought my lift from them. I would probably buy much more if my TJ wasn't eating up all of my funds. |
