Post subject:  Petersen's 4 wheel & Off-road magazine

In the latests issue, a KJ owner from Vt wrote to the magazine about his feelings on a recent article about the KK. He defends the KJ and puts down Jeep for making the KK weaker for off-roading. The magazine agrees but says the reviewer needs his review re-reviewed.

A big article in the mag, talks about Jeeps of Moab. They have pics of all of the Jeeps except, you guessed it, the KJ. When they are talking about the ZJ and how they were surprised that they don't see more of them off-roading, they then say that they don't see the KJ, Commander, WJ & WK on the trails much either.

Here's my thoughts. Most of the vehicles they show and talk about are older models (except the JK). They were paid for a long time ago and has given the owners more money to mod them. Newer vehicles, like the KJ, Commander, WJ & WK are still fairly new and except for the KJ, expensive. Fewer mod parts available due to IFS for them doesn't help. I think there will be a lot more KJ's hitting the trails once they are older (paid off) and we slowly get those mods available.

Obviously, they have never attended our LOST MOab events.

To go along with this:
I don't see many new big trucks on the trails here in Colorado. Everything I always see are older model vehicles and usually Jeeps. Most are made to be road queens with their big lifts. Jeeps are King here in Colorado. As I have said before, you can not go down a road 1 mile without seeing at least 4 or 5 Jeeps.

Now talk amongst yourselves but keep it civil.

Hmmm, sounds like someone needs to send the mag some shots from our past Moab runs...

Not possible,I never see any Jeeps here in CO

J/K,it's like every 1 out of 5 vehicles is a Jeep here, there a ton of KJ's to,granted you don't see many modded ones though there are more poping up all the time.

As far as the battle between the KK and the KJ is not a big one, everything that I personally don't like about the KK can be fixed easy except those darn headlights and ESP(I repeat MY PERSONAL OPINION).Gotta kick a certian someone in the rear end and we can present a nice article/photo shoot for Peterson's to gawk at,and I'm not talking about my SFA KJ either.

Sounds like they need an invite to Big Bear, or East Coast Safari along with pics of what to expect. Might open some eyes.

That is for the 4 wheel drive and Sport Utility though and not the 4 Wheel and Off Road. Is there a significant diff between the two though, they are both Petersen's right? I just know I have never seen any write ups in 4 Wheel and Off Road, which I subscribe to. Still cool about the other mag though.

Funny how I got a subscription to the mag. My ex-girlfriend said she got me the subscription in her kids' name for a Christmas present but she broke up with me just a few days before Thanksgiving.

The KJ is slowly getting there. Remember, most of them are Mall Crawlers, Grocery Getters, and Cute Utes. Once they get banged up a bit and paid for, people will start to play with them.

The mag isn't lying though. There aren't many KJ's on the trails. It is too comfortable and nice to been seen as an off-roader. One of the guys we helped at Chinaman's Gulch (he was driving a Wrangler with 35's or 36's, on a tough obstacle, said he was really surprised to see anyone off-roading a KJ. He was impressed. We helped two big rigs get through the toughest obstacle (Marty spotted for them).

Hear, hear!!!!!

In point of fact, my "body and fender guy", who is from California and a former off-road enthusiast himself, said he had never seen a lifted KJ until he saw mine!!!!!!

I corrected that!!!!!

Well - Jeep sold 800,000 KJ's - LOST is the biggest KJ organization - even if everyone in Lost is lifted and goes off-road - thats less than 8000 - so odds are easily 100:1 that the KJ's not lifted and doesn't go offroad.
(Yeah I know lots of fallacies in that statement - just trying for an order of magnitude)

But that doesn't excuse the magazine for not knowing what's going on in the Jeeping world or the off-road community - because of attitudes like that - I let all those subscriptions expire and I only renew 4 WD and Sport Utility - they cover KJ's
same for purchases - I support vendors who support KJ's.

Not all KJ's of LOST are lifted either.

I for one am a mall crawler / trailer towing KJ owner. I hit two tracks in the forest but not bolders on mountians.

Time takes time. Give the KJ and KK some time and eventually people will appreciate them. (espeically now that you can pick up KJ's for cheap because of the price of gas)

This is the same story I got from superlift about the lift for the KJ at an event they sponsored
There was an easy 300 rigs and only 1 lifted KJ and 2 stockers all of which showed up late and only the lifted 1 would have been allowed to go on the 101 course ,it rained real bad for 2 days before so it was "slick"

No one wants to here "come to this event ,hosted by this group and you will see KJ's off road" because it is a KJ event
they want to see KJs out at general events or KJ's at the public parks out on the trails
Sure there may be 200 lifted KJ's that gets wheeled on the public roads out in California or Colorado but again the folks with magazines and after market companies dont spend the time at these places they spend at larger events held at the parks and this is where they look to see what is being wheeled
They know that there will always be dum dums that want to lift their full size truck ,that is a given, they are looking to see what is on the trails and trailers and that is where the after market will spend their money or where the rag's will take time to to do a story

Just my .02 worth
