RTV Gasket Question

I am going to be changing the fluid in my rear differential Sunday. I am not sure which RTV Gasket maker to use, the blue, or the red high temp. I have both, and just for insurance I picked up a FelPro gasket for the 8.25 rear end.

RTV sucks, MHO. PITA to clean up next time you do it.

I use the gasket, with silicone grease on both of the mating surfaces of the axle and the diff cover. Scrape all the RTV off, smear a thin bead of the silicone grease on the diff cover and the mating surface on the axle.

the silicone grease helps keep the gasket in place while you're installing it.

is the silicone oil resistant though? or do u need to let it dry 100% before you fill it with fresh fluid? if you use the black rtv its oil resistant and i think u can fill it while its still setting up. i just got a lubelocker gasket and say goodbye to RTV

Great, thanks a lot for the information. The gasket is my preferred way to do this. I have not had a lot of experience with RTV and the little that I have had showed that I should leave it alone.

I have been looking for Lubelocker gaskets up here in BC, but no luck so far. I will have to order online if I cannot find a store up here that carries them.

I use Ultra Copper on just about everything all the time and never a leak. I have used it w/ and w/out gaskets and always work fine. I am not a fan of lay a bead on there and go though. I run a bead around the cover, and then spread it out in a thin layer covering all of the sealing surface, allow it to skin a little and install. Hundreds of diffs, tranny pans, etc. done that way and no leaks.

to answer the original question, red high temp RTV is the recommended sealant.

I just smeared the grease on, stuck the gasket to the cover, and bolted it up.

No leaks from any rearend I've had, so I'm assuming I did it right :lol:

Silcone GREASE doesn't dry though;)

I've always used RTV,never had a problem using RTV,never.I prefer the Ultra Gray RTV,been very happy with it in the last 4 years of using just that type.

It's not that I have a problem with RTV itself...I just hate trying to get it off the NEXT time I open it up so I can have a clean sealing surface.

The worst is trying to get an intake manifold off that's been RTV'd by the previous owner...

These work awesome to remove old gaskets and RTV,makes very short work of the job also and doesn't ruin the mating surfaces.I use these when ever I can mounted on a air grinder with adapter.(click link below)

If you don't want to use extra stuff to help you seat your seal, you can just put the seal on the dif cover, put one bolt on the top of the dif cover, one bolt on the bottom of the dif cover, and then line it up with the differential.

For lining it back up I have a long bolt (about 3" long) w/ the head cut off that I thread into one of the top holes a few threads, Hang the cover back on and slide it home then start putting the bolts back in. It is the perfect, simple, 3rd hand for the job.

same as the original bolts.......I could guess but I just dug into my box of hardware till I found one that matched up. You can do the same. :wink:
