REAR DIFF BAD.

OK just got the bad word, my rear diffs are shot.

How much can they cost?
I have been looking on line but cant really find anything as a whole set. just misc parts

Look at it this way - you now have a great excuse to upgrade the rear end - TrueTrac or Locker....

Whats wrong with it? gears, axles?

I priced a complete rear axle from a salvage yard for about $800.

Gears and rebuild kit will run about $300 for Precision's
Axles as I recall about $150 for Yukons
a Locker or limited slip will set you back $200-$800 depending on what you get.
labor should be $200-$400 and will probably be in that range no matter how little or how much you do.

What my guy was telling me, is that the whole rear diff is pretty much on the way out. I still can drive it, but not long trips and fast roads.

Rough price for all the parts is just about 500.
I would do it my self, but I only did a front diff on my yj with a friend who knew how to do this.
I am sure I would not be able to do this my self. I do not know how to set ring and pinon and I dont have the tools to do it.

I agree, 2nd opinion. It shouldn't just go bad for no reason. At least find out what went bad and why.

Dawg, I'd find out what's wrong with the rear axle. new bearings, a locker, maybe new axle shafts, you should be good to go. I'm sure there's something I'm missing, because I avoid opening up axles for any reason - unless it's to change fluid :lol:

That diagnosis is waaay too vague. And the repair qoute is too low for the whole rear diff. to be shot unless they found a deal on used stuff.

SUM UP ON AL REPLYS:

Yea I have been having some trouble ever since I did the lift, WELL 10K after the lift.
I can not say it is the lift. I DRIVE IT HARD and I drive about 200 plus miles a day.
The last time I went wheeling, I was not easy on the KJ. So I guess that i did some damage over the last Twin Arch trips. I do ALOT of mud pits.

The reason why I got a low cost is because I have a buddy who works at a jeep service place and he has delt with me before a few times so he kinda helps me out when I really need it.

He did not have enough time to talk to me about it, plus was alot of people around when we were talking. One of thoes things. (Don't ask if you do not know what i am talking about)!

All that said, over the weekend I will know absolute cost of the rear diff repair.

Most of us know dealers suck, but there are some out there that a great to work with. I have one that wokrs with me.

Well, if you know the guy and consider yourself buds of sorts, then he wouldn't screw you. 2nd opinion still never hurts.

If you can hold off a little while I'll have a complete rear diff for sale,ARB locker,Yukon 4.10's,Yukon HD axles,ruffstuff cover,and it's easy to swap the drums for disc's.

If you dont buy the "ready made diff" I would ,first, get the second opinion
Even knowing the guy I would still have some one else take a look

If you need to "replace every thing" I would get a Detroit or any full carrier replacement locker ,I am not a LSD fan, with bearings and seals and be done with it
Remember that the OE stuff was made to work good in MOST situations but the better after market stuff will be much better and stronger

Also like it was mentioned some one else just had a Detroit installed so if you are worried about how it will handle just hit him up with a PM I would bet that he is 100% satisfied with the product and would be more than happy to tell you about it

I have had other jeeps that I upgraded the diff with lockers and stuff.
Rite now it is a money issue and my DD and the longer it sits, the more money I don't make. It is hard these days with the high cost of gas and having a family.
I gotta do what I can at this time.
These days of watching every penny does count with a family and a home. Broken jeep, well I think rite now I will give it a band aid until the economice of our future changes!
I don't meen to come across as a $& but I have other things to spend my money with.. Granted it is a few extra bucks, that does matter rite now.
