Post subject:  Help a brother out! EVAP System question

Does anyone have a factory service manual that shows where the EVAP system lines run? I need to replace one or more since my engine light is on and I don't have a smoke machine. I have a code scanner so I know this is the reason for the CEL (NO, it's not the gas cap! ). Hopefully someone can help. It's been on for almost a year and it's starting to get to me. Thanks for the help, everybody!

Check the hoses right infront of the gas tank coming out of the evap box.

Is the information not in the regular PDF version of the FSM?

The canister is located back by the fuel tank. As Jeepjeepster said, there are plastic lines that run off of there and to the front. You can see these right in front of the gas tank above the rear differential. You can follow these pretty easily. Ironically, about 2 hours ago I had to replace a 5/16" ID piece on mine to get rid of the CEL light. It was split open about three places and the whole piece was only about 5" long.

On a side note, While you are under there, go ahead and buy plenty of the 5/16" hose and run a hose from the differential breather up to the gas tank filler. This will help in water crossings. I did that while under there too. I already moved the front one up. Now I just have the tranny one. On the rear one, I drilled a hole above the filler (it's plastic" and I ran the hose through it and used the factory breather tip. It looks good. There are factory holes to run everything through, then you have to reach up inside the fender well to thread it into the gas filler area.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Rescu2000. I'll have to check it out tomorrow. Will this require me to remove my Mopar Gas Tank Skid? Where do they connect in the front? I think pics would be very helpful for this one... Thanks again!

I don't have that skid yet, but I don't think you will have to remove it to find the problem. You will see these very clearly and easily once you are on your back looking up past the differential. My money would have been on the hard plastic tubing having been cracked before I looked at mine today. I was very surprised to see the hard plastic was OK, and the rubber was busted wide open in several places. Pretty odd. I replaced it with Tranny tubing (reinforced). We will see how that works. It was $1.22 per foot. Buy plenty of it, it is very useful all over the vehicle.

My purge solenoid was stuck open which was causing my EVAP code to be thrown (small leak and later gross leak if I remember correctly).

A sure sign that it's a purge solenoid problem is if it stumbles trying to start it after topping off the gas tank.

Thanks for the additional! It's definitely not my purge solenoid, since I have no issues starting after filling. I tend to "fill it to the brim" to, so I think this would have come about a while ago if that were the problem. I'm getting the same code - "small leak" - I don't remember the actual code. As far as the skid goes, that's good news, since I don't feel like removing it! If it ever stops thunderstorming here in Upstate NY, I might actually be able to crawl under there sometime in the next week or so! Unfortunately I don't have a garage. :?

Ok, so between thunderstorms I ran outside and dove under the KJ to take a quick-peek under there. What did I see, you ask? NOTHING! All I can see are the hoses coming down and they look fine (as much of them as I can see anyhoo), not to mention there is not even close to enough room for me to get my hands up in there to feel around. How in the heck do you get up there? Now I'm flustered
