I was driving out of town this morning along a secondary road. Just a few klicks out of town. There's a motorbike trail that parallels the road for a mile or so, and a deep ditch between the two. The trail breaks off eventually towards several miles of steep hill trails.

This trail gets muddy when it rains, like it's been doing lately. So I was surprised to see an '86-'88 full size Buick parked up on the trail about 100 yards in from the start, as I drove past. I thought it was joy-riders dumping a car again, which happens fairly often here.

An hour later I'm driving back and the Buick is WAAAAAY down in the ditch, nearly on it's side, and two guys are scratching their heads beside it. I stop and it's obvious these boys are very drunk (8:30 a.m., so I assume they're still drunk from last night). The first guy manages to ask me if I have a tow strap. The second guy had enough of a challenge standing up in the mud.

I tell them the best I can do for them is call a tow truck. The first guy mumbles something about waiting for a "4-by" to get them out. I wished them luck and left.

Now, I might have been able to get them out, but I learned my lesson the hard way many years ago about helping drunks out of ditches.....

smart.

I helped a drunk buddy get out of a ditch one time. When I pulled him out, I stopped. He didn't and kept driving like an idiot.

He broke my back window(hard top wrangler), my spare tire, bent the spare tire mount, broke my third break light attached too the spare tire mount and bent my spring bumpers. (odd blong '95 jeep wrangler bumpers)

too make it worse he didn't have insurance. what to do? he was one of my best friends... i had too live with it.

GOOD CALL. who knows, you got them out and a few moments later they end up killing some one. I would have left them in the ditch too. The safest place for them untill they sober up some

X2 - Many years ago I pulled a drunk buddy out of the snow so he could get home to mama and not get in trouble for being out too late. He didn't seem that drunk to me when we were out in the sub zero air but I guess when he warmed up on the way home the booze hit him. He drove through the garage door when he got home! He was pissed at me for getting him out, his wife was pissed at me for letting him drive drunk and my wife was pissed that I put a drunk back on the road endangering others lives. I thought I was doing a good deed at the time but after I cooled down I realized that they were all right. I should have left his rig in the snow bank and just driven him home. That was the last time I enabled an intoxicated person to drive under the influence.

It does feel a little wrong to just leave them there, but you have to think of the greater good.

Because of his distance reference of a few clicks? I wondered that myself. My dad used to say that all the time.

Being an Ex-EMT, I saw and heard a lot of Drunk Driving stories. I met a state trooper who was a hard case when it came to drunk drivers. I asked him why one time. He said that he had pulled one of his closest friends over once for drunk driving. The guy begged him to let him go, he just lived down the road and was going home. He let the guy go and he didn't go home, he went to get more booze. The state trooper later found his car upside down with they guy dead inside.

He is from BC , he is Canadian . We are in KLICKS not miles . 1.6 klicks is 1 mile ,100 klms is 62 miles.

Now pass be a beer "A"

You definitely did the right thing! I would have assisted them with getting out of the ditch by calling the local constabulary. I'm sure they would have been more than helpful!

Yea offering a ride home would be the right thing to do in your situation, but if I didn't know the guys I would have left them and call the police to come deal with them before someone else came by and pulled them out.
