Post subject:  HELP Before it rains! Sun Roof Wont Close

This morning, beautiful weather. I had the sun roof open. Felt so good in the 60 degree / sunny weather.

Got to work, and the roof wouldn't close. It stops about 1/4 of the way, or goes out maybe 3 inches or so from where it stops. It goes back (all the way open) fine, but will not close.

Anyway to force this thing closed? I don't care if I don't have a moon roof, just want to save my leather interior and sound system.

Any help / suggestions?

is this on a KJ or a KK?

you might have something stuck in the tracks.

Its a kj. How do I check my track? I can see the part that is where the sun roof would be but how do I get to the back?

you may have to pull the track liner the plastic stuff that runs all the way around. If not check the slides where the actuall glass slides could be something stuck in there.

eek, I would have someone open the passenger door and stand up so they can see the roof from outside, then have another person hit the button to close it. Does it make any unusual noise when you try to close it?

It does not make any unusual noise. It worked flawlessly until today when I went to close it.

What would watching the roof from the outside do?

I work at a Toyota plant, people here say if it is a motor I should be able to hit the button and pull the glass at the same time.

If it is a switch, I am out of luck they say.

How hard is it to remove the overhead console, so I can replace the switch?

I was saying ot look from outside because you might see something in the track. Now that I say that I am trying to remember if this one is on the bottom or not. I might be thinking of my old Grand. As for hitting the button and pulling it shut, *shrugs shoulders* got me.

After a good tug while hitting the button the roof closed and now works again!

The track is jamed probably with a rock or small pebble. I'd check that like everyone else mentioned.

Also, I don't think the switch is bad - If that were the case, the darn thing wouldn't move.

I was going to say, if it works at all its not a switch.

Glad its closed. :)

Thanks guys. And not a day too soon. They are calling for scattered showers in and around Lexington.
I will look at the track this weekend.
In the meantime there is a sign on the counsol that says do not open under penalty of death.
I would hate to have that thing get stick open and one of the now famous Kentucky down pours
Thanks again!

a lot of times there is a place where you can pop off a cover and there is a crank inside.. and you could crank it the rest of the way closed. i have also seen the switches go bad and it would only close the roof part way. i would check for both of those things.. the crank/ alternate way of closing it may be in the owners manual. good luck!

I had a 02 neon that would periodically get stuck in the vent position. when it came to the point of being completely jammed, i found a role pin that had try to back its way out from a part of the track. it was a PITA to get back together but never caused me another problem
