Hey all-

Like an idiot I did NOT test the 4x4 when I test drove my 2003 Sport Liberty. Today A buddy and I got curious and tried it out. Took us a few unhealthy scratches to realize the thing has too be in neutral when shifting in too 4 hi, etc.. yeah it was bad.

Anyways, the obvious. the "4 All time" light doesn't work. Assuming it is a light. When I am in in 2 hi(normal) I get a "Part time" light. I am assuming there is a sensor that decides whether or not i need 4 wheel drive when in 2 high. Help here is appreciated.

When in 4 High, very unhealthy sounding clanking, clicks and other various sounds. As far as I can tell the 4 is working, just not the way it should be. Is anyone elses 4 wheel drive audible?

4 Low- Same as 4 high except I get unusual jerking of the left and right rear tires when turning sharply. I know it may not be designed for sharp turning in 4 low. Still though, is this normal? I also red line around 5mph for a few seconds after shifting in too 4 low.

I am checking the obvious front and rear diff's fluid levels and changing them. Is there anything else I should look in too? I have the best warranty you can get when it comes too this stuff. Thanks for the help.

I want too make sure all this stuff is working before I get my suspension lift/tires.

The transfer case position sensor is an electronic device whose output can be interpreted to indicate the transfer case’s current operating mode.
The sensor consists of a five position, resistive multiplexed circuit which returns a specific resistance value to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) for each
transfer case operating mode. The sensor is located on the top of the transfer case, just left of the transfer case centerline and rides against the sector plate
roostercomb. The PCM supplies 5VDC (+/- 0.5V) to the sensor and monitors the return voltage to determine the sector plate, and therefore the transfer case, position.

During normal vehicle operation, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) monitors the transfer case position sensor return voltage to determine the operating
mode of the transfer case.

Live and Learn - or next time, take your elder (trustworthy) parent, friend or coworker with you. Or, the next time you buy a 4x4 - check EVERY thing out

Full Time 4x4 was an option on the KJ. If you don't have a detent that indicates Full Time on the transfercase lever, than that light won't come on. If you do have the "Select Trac" transfercase. The Full time light iluminates underneath the Tach. It glows green.

There is also a little electronic sensor that is known for being out of alignment with the transfercase lever. It doesn't effect anything but you can get it fixed under warranty.

Check the Fluids. My system, while clunky, has never been real audible

DO NOT USE the 4x4 on Dry Pavement!

4x4 low is for rock climbing and steep hill climbing where the added gear reduction is needed to get your KJ up or over a steep obsticle.

Don't forget to read through the owners manual. It should help explain some of the functions of the 4x4 system. Everything else can be explained here

Yes that is correct,I also have the full time icon but I have the command trac t-case.All KJ's have the same cluster but the idiot lights are only wired to what you actually have.

also...i didn't think you needed to be in N to go to 4-hi. I switch into 4x4 in slippery conditions (snow especially) while driving under 55 mph....doesnt even the manual refer to keeping it under 55 when in 4x4?? I never had to shift to N to go into 4-hi though.

Mine shifts into 4hi or 4low just fine in park, park is just the same as being in "N" with a parking paw engaged to prevent the output shaft from spinning is all.

I go into and out of 4x4-Hi [Part Time] on the fly. I've never put my vehicle in Neutral

For 4-low the owners manual clearly states that you need to put the transmission into neutral before moving to 4-low

I've also selected both from Park.
