| Post subject: | Detroit Tru Trac and mpg |
Reading the thread started by Fulltimer got me thinking about the effect on my gas milage that installing a Detroit Tru trac would have. My libby is an '08 4x2 stock. I was wanting to give it what I could to drive up to at least a level three. If changing the gear ratios from stock to4.10 will hurt my gas milage on the interstate, what will changing the rear end do? Will milage be the same or better, or worse, when runningthe stock gears? Or should the gears be changed when the rear end is changed? Thanks in advance, michael |

You will see zero mpg loss or gain from adding a TT in the rear diff.If you want to offroad just trade for a 4wd version, sorry but a 2wd just isn't good offroad. |

Then what would be the potential advantages to a TT on my 4x2? Will I have some increased handling in foul weather situations and winter conditions? |

Having both wheels receiving power should do wonders for any vehicle. I wish that the limited slip or something similar was standard on the KJ. |

The problem with 2wd is you have nothing up front to help you along. If you go over something high, and the front end drops down on the ground your stuck because your back tires are in the air. A 4X4 will pull itself off that thing with the front tires. Extra traction. You would do better than the next guy on trail when he is stock but you will be severely limited in where you can go. Terry I got a rather eye opening experiance on memorial day when my CV snapped and I was left in 2wd,even with my rear ARB locked my KJ only in 2wd was utterly useless offroad, the smallest obsticals where now impossible, you have no idea how much that front diff helping really does for offroading. |

Thats a fact ! I tore the front driveshaft out of my old 69 Bronco at one point, before I could go anywhere I pointed that thing, lockers front and rear, I thought no big deal, unbolted the rest of the front driveshaft and could not go a third of the places I had gone before, maybe out on the highway you would be OK but not back on any trails! I believe the 08 has traction control standard. It is lower maintenance and cheaper. Mine has worked well too. I still may put a tru-trac in the front soon, however. |

Like it was posted above 2wd is for the street you have the traction control stuff so a TT will not be much help You also stated you wanted to run level 3 trails I hope you are looking at trails on a 1-10 scale ,Jeep Jamboree and not the standard 1-5 because a level 3 on a 1-5 will put a hurting on most stock wranglers and will destroy a 2wd KJ I have a picture from a level 4 trail that shows rocks 1/2 the size of my TJ it is about a 3+ going down and a 4+ going up in my book but rated other wise it is doable on 33's and lockers when it is dry here ya go level 3 the tree on my right ,passenger side, in this pic did the damage on my left ,driver side imagine what it would have done to a 2wd KJ ,I am locked ,lifted and tucked with little concern about body damage

one advantage of a limited slip or locker in the rear of a 2x4 is that you could do donuts like mad in the winter with posi!!! plus burnouts would look cooler and you'd have twice as much smoke.... |

Not to mention the fact that you don't have low range without 4wd either. Good luck negotiating any challenging trails in high range. |

i go mudding and running power lines trails all the time when im home in my 2wd kj granted i dont do the rocks or anything to that extent but if you wann get dirty in a mudd pit the locker will help having both wheels in back spinnin is better than havin most stock tj's or kjs' in 4wd and the lack of a low gear SUCKS "DONKEY BUTT" if your near florida the ocala jeep culub form what i understand is considerte to 2wd jeep as long as you still tread lightly and not play in the mud |

Sorry dude im raising the bs flag on that better than stock 4X4 comment. If you want to wheel then you need four wheel drive. You will not be happy until you get it. Before you waste a bunch of money on upgrades see what it costs to go ahead and trade up for the 4X4 when there are used ones available. Imagine how much it would suck to spend all this money and a stock4x4 kj or tj has to pull you out of that 2wd friendly mud pit.... hey medic, what part of Iraq? I was in Al Asad a few years back. |

The only way a 2wd is close to a 4wd is if the 2wd has 38"+ tires and the 4wd is still on 30" tires, then they may be close to equal. |

mind you i dont do the whol rock deal o mountainous trails, i stick to sand trails and mud bogg trails and mud runs if youve not been to one go to it, im not saying a 2wd kj needs to be on moab or rubicon or anythign like that im saying he can still get down and dirty and be safe with it and be confident in his vehicle (other wise i wouldnt own a tj too) |
