Post subject:  Effects of Regearing?

I'm thinking about regearing my Liberty when I install my locker. I realize that I will have to regear the front too, so I'll probably put a DTT up there when I do it. I know very little about gearing. I am thinking of going with the 4.56 Yukons. They have them for the 8.25 (per their web site). I am curently running 245/75/16 BFG's, but I am thinking about replacing those with 31 or 32" mud tires. Something really aggressive. I will probably get a second set of rims for them and swap back and forth. So here are my questions:
1) Will the 4.56's be ok with the 245/75's when I swap them on?
2) Would I be better off with the 4.11's?
3) How can I expect this to affect top speed and MPG?
4) WHEN (not if) I do the SFA Swap, I'm not sure what axle I will be using. Is it possible that my gear choice will cause problems with a similar ratio not being available in the axle I swap in?

Thanks guys!

1) Can't go to 4.56's since 4.10's(actually 4.09's for the D30A,4.10's for the 8.25) is the lowest you can go in the D30A diff
2) No 4.11's for either the 8.25 or D30A,but yes 4.10's is the lowest, and then best chioce to go with
3) With 245's or bigger tires,no effect on top speed, and will gain back lost mpg's from lift and larger tires
4) No but you will want to regear lower to take full effect of the larger(33"+) tires that you will most likely run(4.56's,or 4.88+ if not using the rear 8.25 diff)

TJKJ,
Thanks for the info. You are a wealth of information on the KJ's. Sorry about the gear errors above, but the Yukon web site is showing a 4.56 for the Liberty. I think that is because their software over simplifies and lumps our D30a in with all of the D30's. They also show the 8.25" as a 4.11 which is why I put that up. I was thinking it was 4.10 when I wrote that, so I double checked. I'm sure that this is a screw up on the web page though.

Is there any way to make the 4.56's from the D30 work in the D30a? I'll be replacing the carrier when I put the DTT in.

Sorry now way to make D30 4.56 gears work in the D30A.The D30A's pinion is longer then a regular D30's so a custom set of gears you need to be made, and that's not likely to happen unless you have butt loads of money(a SFA swap would be much cheaper).

while we're on this topic.. has anyone found a good source for 4.10's for the 8.25 and D30a other than out of a 4cyl liberty?? i havnt found anywhere that i can buy the D30a 4.10 gears yet. also is it realllly worth it? i know you get more power and gain mpg's. however with my 6 speed the only difference was instead of starting out in 2nd all the time i have to use first (with 32's)... and i'm still getting 16mpg. how much would 4.10's change that and would the mpg increase out weigh the cost of the re-gearing??

Reider racing has the Dana/Spicer and Precision 4.10's for the D30A,they can also get gears for the 8.25 and install kits, lockers and such.Got to call them for prices though, great prices and fast shipping(I've ordered from them before).

Based on this feedback. I'm thinking I might be better served just leaving the gearing alone until the SAS. I'll drop the Aussie locker in the rear, leave the front open and focus on the SAS. I am thinking I might do the SAS in the EARLY Spring of 09. So I would only be running this setup for the remainder of this year. That is MAYBE 4 more runs off road.

My original plan was to leave the rear axle as an 8.25". I will probably mess with the suspension a little and put a four link setup on it, but still use the factory 8.25".

Thanks,
