Has anyone come up with a way to carry a fishing pole using their roof rails only without scratching the Jeep? If so do you have pics? I don't want to get a roof rack and my pole is 9 feet long (that's what she said) so it won't fit inside the car and I don't want to leave it hanging out the lift gate since I'll be about 10 miles on the highway and 1/4 mile bumpy sand road.

ScarletBegonias used a custom rack for rods (need to post a pic). Without any rack you might have issues unless you get a bunch of those velcro straps to secure it in several places.

You can always use a rod-rack. Here's a place to find them. http://www.digitaldagger.com/gear/miscl/rodholder.html

Anywhere close to the ocean you see the rod holders. A lot of people make them out of PVC pipe.

It depends on how flexy your fishing rods are, but ski-snowboard racks work well with my ocean rods. They are lockable too.

I built a simple rig for my fresh water rods, 6'-8" or smaller, using 2" wide aluminum strips and hanging rod holders. They are up on my ceiling, out of the way and protected.

front's no good. That's not something I want to put on the Jeep. I might try to ski rack bit. I have a Thule swing arm hitch rack but right now I'm missing the hardware for teh ski rack portion to go over the bike rack. But that's a good idea.

The other option I was thinking about on the way home work was to try to get two rather thick foam pads and make some cut out outs so I can make a rough case for the rod and then just strap that to the roof. No I just need to find out where I can get two soft long pads like that.

Not to sure why some people are posting pointless responses.... I thought this board was here to help people out, not say their thread was pointless.

I would get a 10 foot piece of 4" PVC pipe(or what ever size you need) and strap it to the roof rails. You could lay some towels under the pipe if you dont have any kind of cross bars. :)

I didn't say pointless, I said odd. Just the way I read it I guess. I have always just left the rods on the rod rack in the boat. If it was a long trip, then we put the cover on. But, I am guessing that you do not have a boat, and these rods are most likely not 2 or more pieces.

Do you/ can you take the reels off for transportation?
Do you have the rails that go across the top, not just the front to back ones?

If I don't want to break a rod down, I've always just stuck the tip out an open window. You do need to watch for brush or low tree branches, so you don't break the tip of.
