Post subject:  killed struts

ok ok so ya can say it told ya so!!! heres my story. about a 9 months ago i purchased a Rusty's spacer lift for my 03 kj. doing a little bit of research about lifts, i thought a OTT lift would do me just fine for the fact that i would be doing very very little 4x4ing. Now a 9 months later my front struts are starting to float from what i take is from me taking the cheap way out and doing a budget lift. my question is?. Now i know im stating the obvious but i assume the struts are pooched due to the lift?? my next question is what can i do to fix the problem?? i have a little tax money in the bank and
getting the kj back to normal road manners is up on the list. what would be some suggestions as far as fixes with out costing an arm and a leg. I know should have gone with better lift but cash was tight and the look of a lifted kj was turning me on and not letting me see the actual out come that i should have wanted for it. any suggestions would be great.

Get some OME 427 HD front coils and a pair of Rancho 17505 struts and call it good, you'll get about 2 1/2" or lift with those OME HD front coils and all said and done about $300 for the parts.

well share them,

now back on topic, rt_power, the best and cheapest at this point is the OME springs and Ranchos for sure, you can check around for prices but OK4WD does good as well as All Js on prices, will not have to worry again

Only thing is the next time you see someone posting that they are lifting that way, (with an OTT) , please say" Do not!"

thanks a lot guys you have been a great help. now what about changing the upper a arm ?? is that something i should thing of changing?? and is it ok to mix and match new struts and coils with old rear spacers??

check your upper arms to see how the ball joint is but it not worn you don't have to replace them yet. (esp if money is tight)
You can still run the rear as it is, just replace the front coils and shocks er struts

as you can tell i'm not very experienced at lifting jeeps but with the great help from the forum i hope to be at least little more informed. now i know my struts failed because of over extending them. but what makes the new coils and struts different?? will i still need the old spacers?? would it be worth my while to replace the a arms?? i at least got from reading in the forum that rusty's lifts are hard on a arms. my only thinking is if im in there why not get dirty once.

With the OME HD 927 coils up front you will not need to use the Rusty's spacer, unless you want to kill a new set of struts. You will get about 2 1/2" of lift from the HD coils by them self.Getting JBA's UCA's is your choice(I would recommend them though, others would not),but a better UCA with greaseable/replaceable balljoints, made for a lifted KJ(making getting into alignment easier) so less contact between the UCA and the coil, but hey it's your choice and money.

If I were you and wanted to do it right (this time  ) I would do like tjkj said and go for the arms (upper) as well while you have it apart, OME 927 are great springs, give a good ride last a long time

keep asking questions we can help you get it set up right!

what about for 4 wheelin. now i know i said i don't do a whole lot of 4x4ing but i think i was being cautious because of the lift i have. now i know this will be ALOT better set up then rusty's but what could i throw at this set up for 4x4in with out costing me more money to fix it?

Nothing, even getting new struts the OTT liift will just kill the new struts also.$150 for new struts about once a year or $300 or so to get the good stuff up front? Your choice.

Just say no to OTT, no matter who makes it, let it be.

Sounds like a Rap song.

what i ment was i know the OME setup is by far a better setup as a whole then the OTT but as far as a on a scale of 1 to 10 what are the off road capabilities of the OME so if i do decide to 4x4, then im not chucking the struts in another year again. Even if it was a 5 i could deal with as 4x4 is not my main concern

as far as how the OME will last...I have had mine off road a time or two  and with over well almost 70,000 miles now OME Heavy Duty springs and Rancho struts in front not one problem. Have had to get it aligned one time, which is normal and then again when I installed the JBA Gen. 4.5 arms 1500 miles ago.
I also have a ARB bumper hanging off the front so I don't think you can get better unless you go for a Frankenlift
