Post subject:  P.O.S KJ NEED SOME HELP...

I'm having nothing but trouble with this darn thing... at 132,000 miles it's all going downhill....

First my front axle seal is shot and I have front diff oil leaking out ( not bad enough to see on the ground!)

Second and most Important.... ( I threw this code today)

P1491
Radiator Fan Control Relay Circuit
An open or shorted condition detected in the radiator fan control relay control circuit. This includes PWM solid state relays.

I'm pretty sure my radiator fan is not working..... Does anyone know how to fix this.....

Thanks

Chris

How is an oil leak that does not even show a spot on the ground cause to call a diff seal "shot"
hell we have 4 diff's under 2 jeeps and they all have "wet spots" on them

Now as far as the fan issue and it not working I would find a way to bypass all the OE stuff and simply hook up the electric fan to a thermostat set for 180* and relayed off the ignition
no relay over heating ect. and most of this stuff is cheep and almost bullet proof

Think out side the box rather than worry about the small stuff

Okay so scratch the oil problem for a while....

And I have no Idea what you are talking about with the thermostat...etc...

132,000 miles and you are complaining about things wearing out? Judging from all your mods I would guess those aren't just daily driver miles either. I just don't get some people and their unreal expectations in life. Keep the KJ, get it fixed and keep driving it or just go trade it in on something new that "will be perfect". :?

there is a relay i believe near the fan in a cannon style plug...you essentially need to take apart and clean really well all the electronic cables that go to your radiator and fan assembly. That happened once to bigd a former Canadian KJer when we were in Moab together and he found out later that that was the fix for it, seemed to help him out, hopefully it will help you out too.

The fan relay is about 10" under the battery on the drivers side fenderwell, they are about $65-$85 for a new one,not hard to replace at all.

I wanted 150,000 with no problems! :P
I didn't think that was too unrealistic...

I know, I'm being a Jerk....... The KJ is perfect....Thanks for putting me in my place drybones...

do you have a tester to see if you have power there yet? Check fuses etc also. I had one go on a Z28 one time in Orlando, got a toggle switch, wire etc and wire up the fan so I controlled it from in side worked for quite a few miles since I know you have to be on the road tomorrow heading east

The new replacement relays have a really big heat sink on them now to disapate the heat better, much better then the stock one.

I'm not going to PA until friday now.... I need to change all brake pads, and fix this relay deal before I can go....

OH and my Isolator pads come on thursday too.... You know what that means.... LIFT PARTY!!!

Wow 132,000 miles and you pop a relay and you're complaining? I must be getting old, because the cars I drove in the 80s were complete garbage compared to the current breed. The ironic thing, is back in the late 70s early 80s everyone tried to keep their cars for 8 or 10 years, but they were rusting after 5 and often experiencing serious engine/trans problems long before the 100,000 mile mark.

It's somewhat ironic that now a days it seems like most vehicles will easily do 8 or 10 years of service. Many times without a spec of rust on them, and no major component problems (internal engine, trans). But most people don't come close to keeping them that long anymore.

I reached 126K and things are going down hill for me too now. First, the front DS, then pass cv axles 2 times in one year, then drivers side cv axle, then rear diff, and now sounds like my rear ds is going bad.

I am starting to think about trading the KJ in for something else.
This sux because of all the work I put in to it and now it's starting to go down hill

You do understand that parts will start failing after 100,000miles or so,right? If you didn't,well you just got your wakeup call,it happens to all vehicles(even more so on parts you can't grease).Plus when you start modifing them stock parts start wearing even faster from the added stress of the mods done(lift, bigger wheels/tires).

No more leaks..... :D
The dealership wanted $225 just to put the new seal on... HAHAHA yeah freaking right... So I went to a garage (who's owned by a dirt track racer) and he charged me $70 out the door..... had a little trouble putting the fork bolt back in..(all you frankenlifts know what i'm talking about...) so I tipped him well.....

I also had to get new rear brake pads and had all of the rotors re-surfaced....

I'm still waiting on the new relay and wiring for the radiator fan... Putting that in tomorrow....

Oh and I tore out my carpet last week .... I was curious to see what a new carpet would run, and retail is over $800 I talked the dealer down to $487
But I'm just going to wait to add some sheet metal and have the whole tub Line-xed....

I know some of the moving parts are going to start failing anytime after 100,000 miles.... My parents said that they haven't had a vehicle over 100,000 miles and that I have definately got my money's worth over the past 5 yrs......

It's probably about time to upgrade to a SFA soon......

what I was saying to do is to by pass the OE relay and thermostat and just use the + & - leads from the fan
then hook up an after market adjustable thermostat with a relay off of the key switch
same way you would hook up some of the higher power off road lights but use the thermostat in the place of the on off switch and the fan in place of the lights
this will eliminate a few points of failure and if the fan goes out you are ready to rock with an after market fan
but it sounds like you go it

I know things will break down. Even more at 100k

But the entire drive line all at once? and still having problems.
I am used to having thing break down. But this time it seems to be a bit much more lately.
I actually have not gone wheeling in a few months, I maitain the KJ very well. ( EXCEPT OUTSIDE. LOL)

I am starting to think the Lift and bigger tires are hurting me.
