Ok, I know I've seen this question before, but never saw an answer, so I'll ask it again. Does anyone know what the two circular cutouts are on the very back of the stock renegade roof basket are for? Thanks!

I don't know what it's for. I know what it's NOT for. It's not for any structural support and isn't required for attaching the box to the side rails. I just took the box off my wife's renegade last weekend in order to mount a thule crossbar.

It's where the back end of a roof mounted bike rack lays.

Uh .... how can you mount a bike rack when the basket is in place? The factory side rails are not available any more unless you plan on serious dremel'ing to fit a foot kit

Oh ... wait ... is that what those two metal bars up there are for? To put some sort of footing inside then mount cross bar on? That's weird ... who makes footing for those bars?

NM, I took the box off already and I like it better this way :)

the basket has two cross bars that can be put into place to mount stuff like that.

you actually turn those two bars to go across the basket instead of parallel to the length of the vehicle.

Hmm. Must have missed the memo on this one :) OTOH when the bars came out my wife noticed they are of different lengths. The right side one is shorter, or vice versa. I didn't look closely. That must be because it's meant to go into the rear of the vehicle which is a little narrower.

Ah, the light goes on ...

This whole thing is bizarre :) Neither Yakima nor Thule lists the '03 Renny as a supported vehicle in their guide. That's why I took the box off. That, and the wind noise and it shakes on the roof a little ... it only took five years for me to take it off. Oh well :)

The roof rails are wider in the front than in the back by a couple of inches
