I want to add a trailer hitch to my 05 Limited. It does not have the tow package, but I am just planning to tow a small trailer with an ATV or a riding mower for about 6 miles on flat terrain.

Would it be worth the trouble to get one from a wrecking yard?

Does someone on the forum have one for sale?

Any comments would be appreciated.

You can get a Class III hitch at your local U-haul dealer for $129.95

My only suggestion is to get something that is made to fit your vehicle and not one of those "universal" ones.

Buy a hitch online.

They are not that hard to install if you have a couple of jack stands and a jack to help you support the hitch while putting it on.

I avoid u-haul because they can FUBAR a wire harness in no-time flat.

Here's a great site:

DrawTie Hitches

2005 Hitches available from DrawTie

Don't forget your wireharness, hitch pin, ball and the ball mount

if you can find one off a wrecked KJ that would work good and be pretty cheap

You might have no problems pulling that stuff. Without the tow package Chrysler says you can pull UPTO 2,000 lbs (total trailer AND cargo). Just don't think pulling more than what you descibed for a "Short Distance and flat terrein" wont put a strain on your tranny, engine and power stearing.

JSC - it is a 2005 Limited, 25K MI. I bought it last winter for my wife, and she has used it to drive around on my dad's farm far more that I ever thought.

I would like to haul my quad and maybe a small lawn mower on a small trailer from the farm to my house - about 6 miles on relatively flat mid-west Ohio roads.
I would never go any further without adding the radiator and tranny coolers.

Lots of good input so far - thanks everyone.

I think you'd be fine with just a hitch. I hauled more than that when I moved my stuff 900 miles from AZ to CO. I only had a hitch and my load was about 2600lbs going up and down moutains.

For the super-lightweight task you've described, just add a small aftermarket transmission cooler (assuming you have A/T) and then forget about it.

I pull a sled trailer all winter long and I can barely tell it's there - my throttle requirements to maintain a given speed are so close to those without a trailer that I can't tell the difference. The additional thermal load on your cooling system when pulling a small trailer is negligible. The only time you really need the extra capacity of a mechanical fan is when your road speeds are below that where there is sufficient airflow over the radiator, AND you are approaching the peak thermal load for your system (something like heavy towing in traffic, offroading, etc.)

I have a non-tow package 3.7 with a 5 speed manual.
