I went to fire up the KJ this morning and it would not run. It ran 2 days ago, sat yesterday, now wont stay running. Turn the key and it fires up, then dies. It will run fine till the idiot lights come on, then it dies. So, it only lasts for about 2 seconds. Thought I would try here first before I have it towed to the stealership. Any other ideas? Why does this happen right before I want to lift it? |

What is the engine code? Try this method: OFF-ACC-OFF-ACC-OFF-ACC Then a engine code should popup. |

So, start with the key off, then to acc then to off..... and the numbers will pop up in the trip? |

Nevermind. Works now. Bought it used with only 1 key. I had a key cut at HD and gave the real key to my wife since we have to switch off between the liberty and escape to get our child. I guess the key needs the keyfob part to keep the jeep running. That sucks. Guess I have to buy a new key from the stealership for probably $50. |

yeah - it has a chip - have to buy the key with fob and have it programmed - you have to have 2 working keys to program - and mine cost $95 (key & program) at the dealership. |

Yeah, stealership wants $35 for the key, and $40 for the program. They don't even offer vaseline. |

You need a transponder key, yes. Otherwise the security system kicks in and shuts down engine after five seconds. It's a nice theft deterrent feature |

I doubt it would run. But if you have seen "Gone in 60 seconds" I am sure there is a simple way around the RFID tag in the key. They are not the most secure devices. If I was a car theif, I would have the thing a Locksmith has to program the keys. |

You can not prigram a master key without a master key,so you'd need at least one key already programed to your KJ to program it to work with another key.Same goes for programing key fobs, you need all key fobs to program. This is for certain up to the '03 model years at least, last year I worked at the dealership(I was the key and key fob program master $75 for a key and to have it programed is not bad,it cost a guy that brought in a '03 Caddy over $6000 since he bought it used from a shaddy Ma&Pa used car lot with no master key, only a valet key, talk about a headache. |

It would run, but no more than five seconds. This is all decided by the ECU. There are ways to get around RFID, but your average run-of-the-mill car thief will not have the hardware or the knowhow to crack it. It's easier to CLONE RFID than to CRACK it. There are a few different ways RFID can be cracked. You can crack it at the physical level, but let's just say this needs quite a lot of expertise. You have to get to the chip, delaminate it, look at the silicon layer by layer, and if you're lucky you might find the chip uses a standard library of cells and you could then maybe reverse engineer the higher-level functionality based on this info. This is not easy. To clone RFID, you would need antenna / amplifier to record the signals between the reader and the chip. Crack the (optional) encryption, and you might be able to get in after hot-wiring the car. There probably are cloners on the market now, if you knew where to look. You can probably make one with a laptop if you had something like this: GNU software radio RFID sniffer Wired article on GNU radio + USRP hardware USRP See the thread on Schneier's blog on this subject: http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2 ... _keys.html On the other hand if you want to experiment with RFID devices, try: Phidgets USB RFID reader This unit is way cool. It has limited read range, and is extremely easy to use with your computer. I give my kids a card and sew some buttons on to their teddy bear so when they place these RFID-tagged items near the reader then my computer plays the playlist associated with the RFID tag |

Any other ideas? Why does this happen right before I want to lift it? JUST WAIT UNTIL AFTER IT IS LIFTED! This is my boat that i am in now. |

You can buy transponder keys off Ebay. I bought two of them for about $20, and the dealer program and cut them for $40. They seemed curious about the keys, but didn't give me any grief about it. Sure, they don't have the nice lock/unlock/alarm buttons, but what the hell. They work, and they're cheap. |
