| Post subject: | Hood Latch - Surface Rust |
The metal loop on the hood (that secures the hood) has started rusting at a pretty aggressive rate. I plan to sand / POR15 / Paint the offending area but I'm sure this will continue to happen. So my question is about the cause: Besides the steps above, what should I be thinking about to keep this from reocurring later down the road? The Hood doesn't appear loose when closed. Did it just rust from normal use? |

Normal,I wouldn't bother repainting it either since the new paint will just chip off to everytime you close the hood.Sand the rust off and apply a thin coat of greese to the hoop, the grease will prevent rust from forming and will stay on longer then the paint will.

I always thought putting a litle grease on the latch was part of the regular maintenance everyone does, maybe I am about the only one though |

My Sebring isn't rusting out like this and it's a year older then the KJ. Neither have any of the Mustangs or other vehicles I've owned. Well maybe one GM product but still. It's not listed in the Onwers manual as regular / routine mantience either so I never bothered. |

Sorry if I come off the wrong way at times, but my first "real paying " job was in a gas station where I pumped gas , cleaned the windshields and also did lube jobs, part of that was going around with a little grease for the door strickers, hood/truck latch ...well a whole lotta stuff that the places never do any more. Thats in my brain that I have to do it everytime. Same as a lot of questions on here that people ask, I grew up doing them from age 13 so to me its like "thats a really stupid question" but I know not everyone was raised by a hillbilly grease monkey shade tree mechanic like my Dad was |

I wasn't snapping back Tom... I'm humble enough to realize that I was wrong in not greasing the hoop. I suppose I didn't get the proper grease training growing up. Anyway, I sanded and painted to help prevent the rust from reforming straight away. The hoop has been curing since last night so when I get off work, I'll add some grease and go from there. |

I remember the day when we went over a buck at the station I was working. we had to put stickers on the face next to the dials. yes, dials...no digital read outs either. |
