Post subject:  Lil' help, 04' still Missfiring @ idle

Hi all, we bought my GF's Limited on 07/12/08 ( from a ford dealer:shock:) and it has a ruff idle, I told them to fix it before we bought and they said they changed the coil on #3. Went out and started before we signed the papers and it still idled ruff so I told them this and they told us it needed to be run (its been sitting a bit).

Called them up on 07/17/08 told them nothing changed and I changed the plugs (with factory copper champions) as it has 63,xxx miles on it and it made a very slight improvment (plugs in it looked ok). They took it in 07/18/08 and said it needs a new Fuel Injector, they have to order it.

It went back in 07/22/08 and had the injector replaced and there was no change, it still idles ruff. Apparently the dealer told my GF they don't know whats wrong.

So, what should I be looking for, it runs smooth as can be except just taking off, idling and right before coming to a complete stop.

I know there are TSB for the 05-06 about carbon build up on something with the valves, but this is a 04'.

Thanks for any help posible.

Well...

The dealer i bought it from could not fix it so they said "send it to the jeep dealer down the road at no cost to us to diagnose it (my friend works there). Dropped it of yesterday morn and they kept it over night (not sure whats wrong).

Called my friend today and it seems that the cylender Missfireing has low compresion (like cyld 1 has 175 and cyld 3 has 80) so they need to get to original dealers approval to tear down the head to find out whats wrong.

I think i'm going to start looking into the Lemon law rules....

Sad cause She and I both like the libby...

well now you know why the previous owner traded it in. sounds like a "fast one" was pulled on the dealer! sad because it should be covered by the 7/70 powertrain warranty?

Check the valve springs. I remember a post about the valve springs breaking or going bad leading to similar symptoms. No need to pull the heads off if it's just a bad or broken spring.

Well none of this is out of my pocket (except the GF drops me off at work and takes the Hemi, both of us work 1 mile from our house).

Latest update was the Jeep dealer (where the libby is at now) told the Ford dealer (where we bought it) that it will be $1600 to replace the head. I called the Ford dealer and told them to Transfer the Remaining Factory warenty and pay the Deductable and they save $1300. So we will see if they go for it. If not they can shell out the $1600 to fix it.

Not sure if the slight misfire is why it was traded in or not, but none of this is comming out of my pocket at least. And its wierd because the Libby runs great going down the road (lots of power) but idles a bit ruff (no lights on either).

They might pull the head to find Carbon build up, the condition of this Liberty leads me to belive it was babied allot. We'll see

I really think you should listen to another KJ... Everything I've ever read about the 3.7 says the idle is a little looped and rough, espically in cold weather. My dealer says this is caused by the computer leaning out the fuel ratio at idle.

Did you not see this from my post above?

and this was the 3rd libby we test drove, the other did not idle like this, the motor looks likes it wants to jump out of the engine compartment and the hood shakes when it open and idling....I assure you its not "the way its supposed to be".

Thanks for the help though.[/u]

Have you gotten an update from the Jeep dealer yet?

The engine should not run that rough. Mine sounds like a ticking time bomb at idle.

Hopefully the dealership can get your new KJ all fixed up.

Ok....Man....

I got a call from the Ford dealer, They said they are going to pick up the jeep and do the work there  . I told them, no offence but i want the work done at the jeep dealer because they found the problem that you couldn't. They said it's to much money, so I said to transfer the warenty and pay the detuctable. the dealer said we can't do that...you have to. I called the jeep dealer and told them i want them to do the work under warenty, what do i need to make that happen. Jeep dealer says transfer the warenty $162, pay the deductable $100, diagnostic $86 and $50 for oil/coolent ($398) and we will fix it. Call ford back, this is the price $398 to transer etc. for them to do the work, for says OK and is paying the money to the jeep dealer.

WHEW

So the GF is getting her libby back today (not fixed) and we are getting the factory waranty (only 6,000 miles left, or a bit more than a year of driving for her) and its now getting fixed at a jeep dealer the right way incase they find other things worng they can fix them. We have to wait for the warenty to get transfered and the dealer needs to order the head (reman) from chryco. then take it back in a week or so to get fixed.

Well this has not been much fun, but at least its going to get fixed the right this way.

We love the libby so hopfully nothing else happens for a bit.

Amsoil is going in the difs and i am replacing the T/C fluid and she will be set for a while.

Then I need to do all 16 plugs , T/C, and diffs in the hemi too....then i am set, well, still need bilstiens, E-fan, Superchips, lol

thanks for the help, I will keep this thread updated.

6,000 miles a year?

I wish I lived that close to everywhere I went

Seriously, though, at least you got a 1 yr/12k warranty (whichever comes first) on the repairs.

I hardly put 7k on mine in a year.

Glad they got it figured out but it is odd it was driving ok and didnt feel like it was low on torque with a cylinder going down.

Got it back last Thurs. (after a week and a half in the shop due to avalibility on the head.

It got a whole new head and it drives a bit better (a lil more snot) and much smoother ideling. I do notice it is a lil louder running (valvetrain clatter) I asum it needs to break in.

But over all we are glad to have it back, we missed it.

On a side not i did the plugs in the ram (all 16 of them) in about 2 hours and WOW what a diff. 57,000+ miles on the OE copper core Champs.
