Post subject:  Oil Change & 5 Tire Rotation

I took the KJ in for the oil change and 5 tire rotation. I figured they might not know how to do the rotation so I printed out the picture below. Sure enough, they didn't. Plus I had to argue about it. They didn't want to even do a 4 tire rotation because I didn't have factory rims! "What if we scratch them?" My reply was "No big deal! They are off road rims and will get the hell be out of them anyways!". Well they finally gave in and did the rotation...I watched them!

I remember my dad telling me that with today's tires you can't do a 5 tire rotation. Something about the belts being directional or something. He said once you run them you can only rotate them front to back on the same side. That's why I have 4 ATA's with 50k miles on them and a brand new spare with zero miles on it :D . I would love to do a 5 tire rotation so I could get a little more mileage out of them. The chart that you posted is exactly the way I was taught to rotate tires (back before the day the donut spares).

When radial tires first came out the way they had the belts they would slip back a small amount and then it would cause problems if you rotated them to the other side. Thats why we had so many problems with Radial retreads in the beginning (late 70s )
That was all resolved years ago and you should have no problems doing a 5 tire or even switching from one sode to the other.

I have rotated mine fronts crossed to opposite side and rears straight up on the Badyears it came stock with, the Firestone Destination ATs and now the Kumhos with no problems at all. About 33/34 rotates so far.

So go for it,

Thanks Tom! I am getting 5 new shoes in a week or two and maybe I can get a little more wear out of them with the 5 tire rotation. Since they will all be new it will be a good time to implement it too.

Sounds like you went to Wal-mart they are normally the only ones afriad to mess with aftermarket wheels. Dont get tire work done where you buy your sugar, take it to a REALL shop, with TRAINED preofessionals.

I work at a tire shop, and do 5 tire rotations on radial tires all day long. Things have come along way in 20 years.

My grandpa still argues with me that the 225 in 225/75/16 is the hieght, and 75 is the width, and there is no telling him differant.

True Dat! Until I bought the Liberty every care that I have owned in the last 20 years has either had a temporary spare, directional tires or both. My dad still insists that the tires will throw the tread if they cross sides (but he's 82 so he is entitled to his opinion  ).

Well being old enough to remember people being afraid to run radial tires I have seen it all in how people look at them now and back then, lots of changes for the better over the years. Heck I can remember the first set of 12.00X15s I put on my truck and people thought they were huge tires on a pick-m-up

5 tire rotation with todays technology is fine, it is the correct way to get the best wear out of your tires. the only exception is if you have directional tires, they can not be crossed to the other side of the vehicle. They are marked with a rotation arrow on the tire.

In my computer geek mind the 5 tire rotation just doesn't compute. If you have a spare that hasn't touched the road for 5k - 7k miles and then try to bring it into the mix has to have an adverse affect to some degree somewhere.

Maybe if you rotated ever 1k - 2k then it may make sense.

I bought my 04 Libby that had newish Goodyear Wrangler SR-A's on it that had only 10k miles and now 6k miles later the spare has a depth of 13+/- and the others are reading 7.5+/- .... that is a heck of alot of wear after only 16k miles!

When I was doing a 5 tire I never had any problems at all, of course I rotate every 3500 to 4000 as well, the spare went to the right rear , main drive wheel, and always wore all out about the same time.

at least you would get some use out of it. If you never use the tire and it just sets there, any where, it will either dry rot or become to old to be safe. I rotate every 3K when I change oil. Beside the worst thing you can do to a tire is NOT use it.

Terry makes a good point. My spare has never seen the ground and has no cover due to the fact that my license plate is mounted to the rim (my avatar is a shot of it). Even though I keep it clean and put tire gel on it every time I wash the vehicle, the spare definitely shows signs of drying and maybe rot. While the ones on the ground just look like tires that have 40k miles on them. My right side tires definitely show more signs of wear than the left side (I just do a front to back rotation every 4000 to 6000 miles).

So basically you have a very expensive tailgate ornament? With wear showing on your 4, I'd hope not to get a flat and have different size tires on same axle. Even though it may be inmaterial, it may work your LSD if equipped. From the sounds of it, you have an open diff? Correct? Hence your RR get all the power.

I obvisoulsy do a 5 tire rotation. I paid for 5 tires, I might as well use all 5. I may switch brands next time, who knows?

To each their own.

(BTW good thread.)

the differance between a brand new tire and a 1/2 worn tire isnt enough to cuase any issues on a typical 4wd vehicle. LSD or not.

I know that most likely not too many of us do it , but the tire rotation should take place every 5k. so I have read and most shops have confirmed it.

Thanks for the diagram! I printed if off because I somehow always get confused when doing a 5 tire rotation. I placed the diagram in my maintenance log so I will know for sure! Here’s my reason for the 5 tire rotation.

Example: A Right Rear Tire may get rotated 4 times before becoming a spare. Therefore, if you rotated your tires every 5,000 miles, your tire would have 20,000 miles on it before becoming a spare. The tire gets to rest for 5,000 miles and then back to work for another 20,000 miles before becoming a spare again. In this case scenario, a spare could give you 10,000 additional driving miles. Each tire may only have 40,000 actual miles on them while the vehicle has traveled a distance of 50,000 miles. The questions is: Is 10,000 extra miles worth it? If you did this on 4 sets of tires, that would be a total savings of 40,000 miles. Which is like a free set of tires.

I have tossed around the idea of getting four vs five tires when ordering my general grabbers for some time now. I currently have a perfect never used goodyear on the spare as I bought the vehicle two years ago and the tires were fairly worn already so I didnt bother. Technically you are right about rotating in the fifth tire and resting each tire 5k miles every 20k miles however you pay for an extra tire each time you buy a set. If a tire is 100 dollars then every four sets you have paid for that extra set you say is free.

Only reason I ordered 5 tires(about 15 minutes ago) is 1.) makes rotating them easier as I only need one wheel off the ground instead of jacking up three points to rotate diagonal because you have a spare tire to put on. 2.) if I get a flat 2-3 years from now I have a perfectly worn spare to add on rather then buying a new matching tire at that time with new tread. 3.) I can't stand looking at a goodyear on the back of the Lib instead of a matching tire.

If you have a clutch operated LSD(trac loc) a 5psi difference in tire pressure can prematuraly wear the LSD clutches,a 1/2 worn tire and a new tire does the same thing.A open diff or a ARB equipted diff it will not matter.
