The left rear tire pressure sensor died recently, giving me a wonderfully annoying blinking yellow light in the dash. I really could care less about the sensor, but the light and beeping on startup is going to get old quick... So I'm looking for some options for replacing the sensor without spending too much money.

My father (papaindigo) and I have looked around and found a range of replacement parts and prices, and aren't sure exactly what we need. Does anybody know specifically what part # we are looking for and/or can recommend a supplier?

Also, we've heard that some - not all - of the replacement sensors are self-programming (drive for 5 minutes and the EVIC figures things out). Can anyone confirm this?

I had to replace a sensor, and if memory serves me correct it was Dorman brand from Advance Auto. The guy at the tire shop who installed it told me that I'd have to take my Jeep to the dealership for them to hook up to my Jeeps computer so it would recognize the new sensor. The instructions that came in the box said that with certain Jeep/dodge/chrysler vehicles, after replacing the sensor to let the vehicle sit for 20 minutes before driving. I let my Jeep sit for 20 minutes, and within 2 minutes of driving the new sensor was recognized...

Had one replaced last year. ~$40 from Sam's Club where I got my tires. Mine self-programmed/calibrated. I don't have the specifics on my replacement though.

Might as well plan on replacing all of the sensors, the others will start dropping out soon.

I don't see this as a maintenance type part. No need in replacing all of them when one has went bad. He isn't going to get a discount for replacing them all.

Sometimes parts just go bad. Just because one did it doesn't mean all of them will. Replacing all of them prematurely will do nothing but waste money.

The batteries in those sensors have a average lifespan of 5-7 years,he has a '06(makes them about 6 years old) so the others are on borrowed time.

Not to start a fire but average is not the same as expected rather it's a calculated point in a range of values. In this case the range appears to be 5-12 with the average about 7. Actual battery life depends on a lot of factors including type of battery although most are long life lithium; ambient temp; amount of use which relates to 1) whether the sender goes to sleep when the vehicle is not moving (most do) 2) tire pressure sampling rate (lots of checks vs. fewer checks) and 3) amount of use (lots of miles driven vs not so many). I don't recall the build date on stoutdog's CRD but I can say that it does not get driven anywhere near the US average 12k or so miles per year so while the sensors may be about 5.5 years old they have spent a lot of that time sleeping. IMHO he was unlucky and had one battery die early.

FYI had exactly this conversation with my long time tire guys back in Sept 2011 when I installed new tires on my 7/2005 build date CRD, also low mileage with sensors currently just fine (now I bet Murphy will strike and one will die tomorrow). Consensus was don't spend the $s to replace functioning sensors wait until they fail - what you ultimately spend on labor installing new sensors will more than be paid for by what you did not spend replacing good ones early.

The underlying question is does anyone have a particular recommendation on what type of sensor to buy? Generally aftermarket prices seem to run about $50 for the sensor + install although the online OEM suppliers list what appears to be the sensor for ca. $20 with a list price of $29 which seems odd.

Subscribing.......

My TPMS sensors are good so far with a build date of Nov. 2006. I perform a 5 tire rotation every 3,000 miles, and so far all 5 are registering. I'm sure that the cold temperatures are hard on the sensors/batteries. When temperatures are in the subzero range, it takes a while for them to start reading. I know the day is coming in which I will need to replace a sensor, so I'm subscribing for the best value (price/quality).

I fixed the issue. I bought this part from Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001UC ... PDKIKX0DER

And then I took it over to a local PepBoys, which only charged me for a tire balancing after popping the tire off the rim. Cost <$16 total on the install.

I'm confused, are they $23.22 each or for 4?

Each. FYI, apparently Amazon's "sale" is pretty much for the going rate. In other words, they're pretty easy to find for around $20-25

Okay, that's what I thought. When you posted the link, I thought you were talking about a good deal. All four for that price would have been a good deal!

I had to replace one too. mine was a cracked valve stem not battery failure. I got doorman part from rockauto. they charged me like $27 including postage. then I took it to the country tire place i go, they put it in and rotated all 5 tires for $20
